Hebrew word · H3298

יַעֲרֶשְׁיָה

veya'areshyah

Jaareshiah

A name ending in -yah (YHWH). The first part is obscure. One proposal links it to a root meaning 'to plant' (known in Arabic), giving something like 'Yah plants'. Others suspect the spelling was damaged in copying. No explanation is secure.

Appears once in the Hebrew Old Testament.

Where it appears

1 Chronicles · 1
  1. 1 Chronicles 8:27 וְיַעֲרֶשְׁיָ֧ה and Jaareshiah

Jaareshiah, Elijah, and Zichri were the sons of Jeroham.

Here: A personal name found only here in the Bible. The ending -yah is a short form of God's name (YHWH), so the name says something about Israel's God, though what the first part means is uncertain. The 'and' at the front links this verse to the names in verse 26: the list of Jeroham's sons runs across both verses.
