שְׁחַרְיָה

ushecharyah

Shehariah

In depth

From the study of 1 Chronicles 8:26

Range of meaning

It is built from the root sh-ch-r plus -yah (YHWH). The noun shachar means 'dawn'. The related verb shichar means 'to seek earnestly' (literally, 'to look for at first light'). So the name means either 'Yah is dawn' or 'Yah has sought / is sought'.

Against the English

English transliterates it as 'Shehariah' (or 'Shechariah'). The meaning is hidden, as it is with all transliterated names.

Used elsewhere in the period

It appears only here. Names built with shachar are known elsewhere, for example Shaharaim in 1 Chronicles 8:8 of this same Benjaminite list.

  1. 1 Chronicles 8:26 וּשְׁחַרְיָ֖ה and Shechariah

    Shamsherai, Shehariah, Athaliah,

Here: The second son of Jeroham. The name ends in -yah, a short form of God's name YHWH, so it is a confession of faith. It probably means 'Yah is the dawn' or 'Yah has sought'. This is the only person in the Bible with this name.
