What it means

coast, island, shore, region

Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Isaiah 49:1

Range of meaning

Land bordering water: coasts, coastlands, islands, and especially the Mediterranean seaboard and its islands (Cyprus, Crete, the Aegean, 'the coastlands of the nations' in Gen 10:5). In poetry it often means 'the ends of the earth', the most remote peoples known to Israel.

Against the English

KJV 'isles' and BSB/WEB 'islands' suggest small islands in the sea to a modern reader. Some versions say 'coastlands' or 'distant lands'. The Hebrew picture is wider: the whole far-flung maritime world to the west.

How it drifted

Early English 'isles' covered a wider range, and the Latin Vulgate's insulae fixed the island picture. Today 'islands' sounds like scattered specks of land rather than 'the far shores of the world'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 10:5 ('coastlands of the nations'); Jer 2:10 ('coasts of Kittim', i.e. Cyprus); Ezek 27:3, 6 (Tyre's trading coasts). It is frequent in Isa 40–66: 40:15; 41:1, 5; 42:4, 10, 12; 51:5; 60:9; 66:19. The Greek Septuagint uses nēsoi ('islands').

From the study of Isaiah 42:4

Range of meaning

Coastland, island, shore. In the plural it means the distant Mediterranean coasts and islands, and by extension the remote nations at the ends of the earth.

Against the English

KJV 'isles', BSB/WEB 'islands', ESV/NASB 'coastlands', NLT 'distant lands beyond the sea'.

How it drifted

'Islands' can call up small isolated islands. The Hebrew points to the far rim of the known world.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isaiah 41:1, 5 ('coastlands, be silent before me'; 'the coastlands saw and feared'); 49:1; 51:5 ('the coastlands hope for me'); Genesis 10:5 (the coastland peoples).

From the study of Isaiah 41:1

Range of meaning

Coastlands, shores and islands, especially of the Mediterranean (Kittim/Cyprus, the Aegean, the far west). In poetry it stands for the distant ends of the earth. Isaiah 40–55 uses it often for the farthest nations (40:15; 41:5; 42:4, 10, 12; 49:1; 51:5).

Against the English

KJV and BSB say “islands/isles,” which leaves a modern reader picturing small islands. ESV and NASB say “coastlands.” NLT says “lands beyond the sea,” which conveys the remoteness.

How it drifted

In English “island” means only land surrounded by water. The Hebrew word covered any coast or shore across the sea, and so the far-flung peoples living there.

Used elsewhere in the period

Genesis 10:5 calls the seafaring peoples descended from Japheth “the coastlands of the nations.” Ezekiel 26–27 uses the word for the Mediterranean trading partners of Tyre. In Isaiah 41:5 the same coastlands “see and fear” as the trial goes on.

Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are considered a speck of dust on the scales; He lifts up the islands like fine dust.

  12. Isaiah 42:15 לָֽאִיִּ֔ים <into> <the> islands

I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn the rivers into dry land and drain the marshes.

Here: 'Into islands/coastlands.' The river shrinks until its bed is exposed sandbars and dry ground. The same word means the far coastlands earlier in this chapter (42:4, 10, 12), so some hear a play on words. Others think the text first read 'dry places'.

  13. Isaiah 49:1 אִיִּים֙ O islands

Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples: The LORD called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He named Me.

  16. Isaiah 60:9 אִיִּ֣ים islands

Surely the islands will wait for Me, with the ships of Tarshish in the lead, to bring your children from afar, with their silver and gold, to the honor of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for He has glorified you.

I will establish a sign among them, and I will send survivors from among them to the nations—to Tarshish, Put, and the archers of Lud; to Tubal, Javan, and the islands far away who have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. So they will proclaim My glory among the nations.

Here: 'The coastlands': the shores and islands of the Mediterranean, a favourite word in Isaiah 40–66 for the remotest peoples who 'wait for his instruction' (42:4).

Jeremiah · 4

For the day has come to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every remaining ally. Indeed, the LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.

Here: A coast or island reached by sea. Used of Caphtor, it most likely means an island, Crete.

  3. Ezekiel 27:3 אִיִּ֖ים islands

Tell Tyre, who dwells at the gateway to the sea, merchant of the peoples on many coasts, that this is what the Lord GOD says: You have said, O Tyre, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’

Here: The coasts and islands of the Mediterranean, the far-off maritime world linked to Tyre by its shipping (Cyprus, the Aegean, the western lands as far as Tarshish). It means 'coastlands' more than strictly 'islands'.
