In depth
From the study of Numbers 14:6
- Range of meaning
A personal and clan name. It is spelled exactly like keleb, "dog". Elsewhere Caleb is called "the Kenizzite" (Num 32:12; Josh 14:6, 14). The Kenizzites were a clan with links to Edom (Gen 36:11, 42) who became part of Judah.
- Against the English
English readers do not hear any meaning in the name. A later Jewish reading takes it as kol-lev, "all heart", tied to God's praise of Caleb for following "fully" (14:24). That is wordplay, not the name's actual origin.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Akkadian personal names built on kalbu, "dog", are known. In them "dog of [a god]" expresses loyal servanthood. Letters from that world also use "your dog" as a humble way of saying "your servant" (compare the Lachish letters, and 2 Kgs 8:13). Whether Caleb's name carried that "loyal servant" meaning is uncertain.
From the study of 1 Chronicles 4:15
- Range of meaning
Personal name. It has the same consonants and vowels as keleb, "dog."
- Against the English
English readers hear only a name. A Hebrew hearer would have caught the sound of "dog."
- Used elsewhere in the period
In the ancient Near East, "dog" was used for a loyal servant, of a king or of a god (Akkadian kalbu in personal names, "your servant, a dog" in the Lachish and Amarna letters). The popular sermon reading "Caleb = kol-lev, 'whole heart'" is wordplay, not etymology. It does echo Numbers 14:24, where Caleb "followed fully."
From the study of Numbers 14:30
- Range of meaning
Caleb: the name is most likely related to kelev, 'dog.' Animal names were common and not insulting; the dog could stand for loyalty. The popular explanation 'whole-hearted' (kol-lev) is a pun, not the real derivation. Yehoshua means 'the LORD is salvation' or 'the LORD saves.' Moses gave him this name in place of Hoshea (13:16).
- Against the English
Names are carried over without change. Note that 'Joshua' and 'Jesus' are the same Hebrew name (Greek Iēsous). The Septuagint calls Joshua Iēsous.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Caleb is called a Kenizzite (Num 32:12; Josh 14:6, 14), probably a non-Israelite clan absorbed into Judah (compare Gen 15:19; 36:11). Joshua is identified as an Ephraimite (Num 13:8) and as Moses' attendant from youth (Num 11:28).

Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
Here: One of the two faithful spies of Numbers 13–14. The name sounds like the Hebrew for “dog” (kelev); in the ancient Near East a servant could call himself his lord's “dog” as a mark of loyalty, though what the name originally meant is uncertain.
-
Joshua 14:13 לְכָלֵ֥ב to Caleb
Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.
Here: The recipient of the grant. The name sounds like kelev, 'dog'. Ancient Near Eastern names using 'dog' often meant a devoted servant of a god, so the name does not have to be an insult. Its exact meaning is debated.

According to the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah—Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)
Here: The verse puts Caleb first in the Hebrew word order, which makes him the focus. Up to verse 12 the chapter has been tracing borders. Now it turns to one man. In Hebrew the name sounds like the word for 'dog' (kelev), but nothing in this verse plays on that.
-
Joshua 15:14 כָּלֵ֔ב Caleb
And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak—the descendants of Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.
Here: Caleb son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite (14:6). He was one of the two spies who said forty-five years earlier that Israel could take this land. In Hebrew the subject comes after the verb and 'from there', which puts the stress on the action and the place.
-
Joshua 15:16 כָּלֵ֔ב Caleb
And Caleb said, “To the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
Here: Caleb son of Jephunneh, one of the two faithful scouts (Num 13–14), now an old man claiming the hill-country inheritance promised to him (Josh 14:6–15). He speaks as head of his clan, with authority over both land and daughter.
