In depth
From the study of Jeremiah 35:4
- Range of meaning
A room or hall attached to a sanctuary or public building. In practice it almost always means a side chamber in the temple courts, used for storing offerings and equipment, for lodging and working space for priests and Levites, for meetings, and sometimes as a family's or official's assigned room. Once it means a room at a local high place (1 Sam 9:22, where Samuel's guests eat).
- Against the English
'Chamber' (KJV, BSB) and 'room' (WEB) are both fine. 'Chamber' can sound like a bedroom or a private apartment. These rooms were working spaces in a public religious complex, nearer to offices or vestries.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Jeremiah 36:10 (the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan in the upper court, where Baruch reads Jeremiah's scroll), 36:12, 20–21 (the scribe's chamber in the palace); 2 Kgs 23:11; Ezra 8:29; 10:6; Neh 10:37–39; 13:4–9 (Tobiah moved into a temple storeroom); 1 Chr 9:26; 23:28; 28:12; Ezek 40:17, 38, 44–46; 42:1–13. Some scholars link the word to Greek leschē, 'meeting hall', but which language borrowed from which, or whether they are related at all, is debated (HALOT).
From the study of Ezekiel 42:13
- Range of meaning
A room or hall attached to a sanctuary or official building. It was used for storage, for officials and for sacral meals. In 1 Sam 9:22 Samuel seats his guests in the lishkah at a sacrificial meal. Jer 35:2–4 mentions named chambers in Solomon's temple. Neh 13:4–9 describes a temple storeroom for grain, frankincense and vessels, which Tobiah misused and Nehemiah had purified.
- Against the English
"Chambers" (BSB, KJV) or "rooms" (WEB). Both are fine. The modern word "chamber" can suggest a bedroom. These were large storage and dining blocks of several storeys.
- Used elsewhere in the period
1 Sam 9:22; 2 Kgs 23:11; Jer 35–36; Ezek 40:17, 38, 44–46; 1 Chr 9:26, 33; 28:12; Neh 10:37–39; 13:4–9. Some propose a link with the Greek lesche, "public hall or clubhouse", but this is uncertain.
From the study of Nehemiah 13:4
- Range of meaning
A room or hall, especially one of the side-chambers built around a temple court. Such rooms served as storerooms for tithes and offerings (Neh 10:37–39; 12:44; 13:5), as rooms where priests ate holy food and changed vestments (Ezek 42:13–14), as quarters for temple staff (1 Chr 9:26–27, 33), and as private rooms of officials (Jer 35:4; 36:10; Ezra 10:6).
- Against the English
"Chamber" (KJV) keeps the singular. BSB and NLT say "storerooms", and ESV, NASB, WEB and YLT say "chambers"/"rooms". The plural is an interpretation: it takes the singular as standing for the whole storage complex.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The word appears mainly in late books (Chronicles, Ezra–Nehemiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah), which describe the Second Temple's or the ideal temple's ring of side-rooms. In the Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation) Ezra–Nehemiah often renders it with words like gazophylakion (treasury) or pastophorion (side-chamber).
