In depth
From the study of Deuteronomy 12:11
- Range of meaning
Mivchar means choice, best, the pick of something (Gen 23:6, 'the choicest of our tombs'). Neder is a vow, or the offering paid to fulfil one.
- Against the English
KJV, WEB and YLT keep 'choice vows' or 'choice of your vows'. BSB, NIV and others say 'choice offerings/possessions you vow', which is clear but loses the visible tie to 'choose'.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Vows were common in Israelite piety: Jacob (Gen 28:20–22), Hannah (1 Sam 1:11) and Absalom (2 Sam 15:7–8), whose vow had to be paid at a sanctuary. Deut 23:21–23 insists vows must be paid promptly.
