In depth

From the study of Ecclesiastes 5:8

Range of meaning

An administrative district, province or jurisdiction; a place where judgment (from the root dyn, 'to judge') is administered. Late Hebrew and Aramaic.

Against the English

'Province' (BSB, KJV, YLT) and 'district' (WEB) are accurate. Some modern versions generalise to 'the land' or 'throughout the land', which loses the imperial-administrative flavour.

Used elsewhere in the period

Common in Persian-period books: Esther (the 127 provinces), Ezra 2:1, Nehemiah 1:3, 7:6, Daniel 3, and in Aramaic documents of the Persian empire. Earlier occurrences are rare (1 Kgs 20:14–19). Lamentations 1:1 calls fallen Jerusalem 'a princess among the provinces'.

From the study of Daniel 8:2

Range of meaning

An administrative district or province, from the root din, 'to judge'. It originally meant a 'jurisdiction', the area under a governor's judicial authority. Later Hebrew uses it for 'city' or 'country', and modern Hebrew for 'state'.

Against the English

'Province' is accurate. 'Province of Elam' should not be read as a modern country or state.

Used elsewhere in the period

It already appears in 1 Kings 20:14–19 ('the governors of the provinces') and Lamentations 1:1 ('princess among the provinces'). It becomes very common in Persian-period books (Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah) for the empire's administrative units.

From the study of Esther 1:3

Range of meaning

Province, administrative district, literally an 'area of jurisdiction' (from din, 'to judge'). In later Hebrew it came to mean 'state, country'.

Against the English

'Provinces' everywhere, which is accurate.

Used elsewhere in the period

Used for Persian and Babylonian districts in Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel and Esther, and in the Aramaic of Ezra (medinta). The Elephantine papyri also use it for administrative districts.
