What it means

highway, raised way, public road

Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Isaiah 40:3

Range of meaning

A raised, built-up road or highway, from salal, "to heap up". Used for main roads (Judg 20:31; 2 Kgs 18:17) and figuratively for a straight course of life (Prov 16:17).

Against the English

"Highway" is close. The point is that this is an engineered road, built up and levelled, not a track.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isaiah 11:16, 19:23, 35:8 ("a highway... the Way of Holiness"), 62:10 ("build up, build up the highway"). Babylonian kings built paved processional ways for gods and kings, such as the Procession Street through the Ishtar Gate in Babylon.

From the study of Isaiah 36:2

Range of meaning

A raised, built-up road or causeway, from the root s-l-l, "to heap up" or "cast up" (earth for a road). It was a deliberately built public way, as opposed to a track (derekh is the general word for 'way').

Against the English

"Highway" (KJV, ESV) today suggests a multi-lane motorway. "Road" (BSB, NIV) is flatter but more realistic. The original means a made-up road leading out from the city.

How it drifted

The English word 'highway' once meant a main public road, often raised. Its modern sense of a motor route has narrowed what readers picture.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isaiah uses mesillah in loaded passages: 7:3 (same place), 11:16 ("a highway for the remnant… from Assyria"), 19:23 (a highway from Egypt to Assyria), 40:3 ("make straight in the desert a highway for our God"), 62:10.

From the study of Isaiah 19:23

Range of meaning

A built-up, raised road, from the root s-l-l, "to heap up, cast up" (compare Isaiah 57:14; 62:10, "build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones"). It means a constructed public road for through traffic, as opposed to a footpath (derek can be either). It can also mean a public route through a territory (Numbers 20:19), and by extension a person's course of life (Proverbs 16:17).

Against the English

"Highway" is a good rendering. The English word first meant a raised main road, which is exactly what a məsillāh is. A modern reader may picture a paved multi-lane motorway. The idea is a major, deliberately built, open route.

Used elsewhere in the period

In the Hebrew Bible: Judges 20:31–32 and 21:19 (roads of Benjamin); 1 Samuel 6:12 (the cows go straight along the highway to Beth-shemesh); 2 Kings 18:17 = Isaiah 36:2 and Isaiah 7:3, "the highway of the Washer's Field." That last road is where Isaiah confronted King Ahaz, and where the Assyrian field commander later stood to demand Jerusalem's surrender. In Isaiah the highway becomes a theme: 11:16 (a highway for the remnant from Assyria, "as there was for Israel when they came up from Egypt"), 35:8 ("the Way of Holiness"), 40:3, 49:11, 62:10. In the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Community Rule (1QS 8:14) quotes Isaiah 40:3, "prepare in the wilderness the way… make straight a highway."

From the heavens the stars fought; from their courses they fought against Sisera.

  2. Judges 20:31 בַּֽמְסִלּוֹת֙ in the highways

The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.

Here: 'On the road of…'. A mesillah is a built, raised road, from a root meaning 'to heap up'. It was a main approach road, not a footpath.

1 Chronicles · 2
  1. 1 Chronicles 26:16 בַּֽמְסִלָּ֖ה on the highway

Psalms · 1
  1. Psalm 84:5 מְ֝סִלּ֗וֹת [whom] highways

Blessed are those whose strength is in You, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

Here: Built roads, made by piling up and levelling earth: the main roads, not footpaths. Here they are the roads up to Jerusalem's temple that the pilgrims walk (verses 6–7). The Hebrew does not add 'to Zion' or 'pilgrimage'. Those are translators' explanations.

Proverbs · 1
  1. Proverbs 16:17 מְסִלַּ֣ת [the] highway of

The highway of the upright leads away from evil; he who guards his way protects his life.

Here: A raised, graded public road, built up and cleared of stones, not a footpath. It sets up the picture of a well-made road where travel is safe and direct.

Isaiah · 9
  1. Isaiah 7:3 מְסִלַּ֖ת [the] highway of

Then the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son Shear-jashub to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct that feeds the upper pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field,

  2. Isaiah 11:16 מְסִלָּ֔ה a highway

There will be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.

Here: A built road, banked up and cleared, not a footpath worn by walking. The picture is a proper, engineered route for a large company to travel safely.

  3. Isaiah 19:23 מְסִלָּ֤ה a highway

In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt, and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together.

Here: A built-up road, banked and cleared, made for through traffic. In Isaiah this is a loaded image. The prophet's highways usually carry God's scattered people home (11:16; 35:8). Here one links Israel's two great oppressors to each other.

  4. Isaiah 33:8 מְסִלּ֔וֹת highways

The highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The treaty has been broken, the witnesses are despised, and human life is disregarded.

  6. Isaiah 40:3 מְסִלָּ֖ה a highway

A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.

  7. Isaiah 49:11 וּמְסִלֹּתַ֖י and highways my

I will turn all My mountains into roads, and My highways will be raised up.

Here: An engineered road, not a footpath worn by use, and the word itself carries the idea of earth heaped up. 'My' again claims ownership, the way a king might speak of royal roads.

  8. Isaiah 59:7 בִּמְסִלּוֹתָֽם׃ [are] on highways their

Their feet run to evil; they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are sinful thoughts; ruin and destruction lie in their wake.

Here: A built-up, banked road or causeway, not a footpath. Wherever they travel, ruin goes along. It also sounds a bitter note against Isaiah's 'highway for our God' (40:3; 62:10).

  9. Isaiah 62:10 הַֽמְסִלָּה֙ the highway

Go out, go out through the gates; prepare the way for the people! Build it up, build up the highway; clear away the stones; raise a banner for the nations!

Here: The noun comes from the same root as the verb just shouted twice: 'heap up the heaped-up road'. It means an engineered, built-up main road, as opposed to a footpath.
