In depth

From the study of Obadiah 1:3

Range of meaning

Marom: height, elevated place, and 'on high' as the realm of God (Isaiah 33:5; 57:15; Psalm 93:4). Shevet / infinitive of yashav: sitting, dwelling, being enthroned.

Against the English

KJV/WEB 'whose habitation is high' and BSB 'whose habitation is the heights' are accurate but flat. The Hebrew 'height of his sitting' suggests someone seated, almost enthroned, on high.

Used elsewhere in the period

Marom is often where God dwells and sits (Isaiah 57:15: 'I dwell in the high and holy place', marom). Isaiah 14:13–14 uses the climb-to-the-heights image for the king of Babylon, followed by his fall.

From the study of Psalm 56:2

Range of meaning

"Height, elevated place": the heights of a field or a city (Judg 5:18; Prov 9:3), the heavens as God's dwelling (Ps 102:19; Isa 57:15). It can mean "loftiness" or "haughtiness" (Isa 37:23, "you raised your eyes on high"; Ps 73:8, "they speak from on high"). It is also used adverbially, "on high."

Against the English

KJV, YLT: "O (thou) most High," a call to God. BSB, WEB, NASB, ESV, NIV: "proudly" / "in their pride." Some modern versions move it to open verse 3. NLT: "boldly."

How it drifted

The KJV's "O thou most High" looks like the familiar title for God, ʿElyon. But the Hebrew word here is not ʿElyon, and mārôm is never clearly used as a name for God in direct address anywhere else.

Used elsewhere in the period

Psalm 73:8 has "they speak from on high" (mimmārôm) about the arrogant. Psalm 92:8 says "you, LORD, are on high (mārôm) forever," which applies it to God, though as a description, not a name. The Septuagint and Vulgate read it with the next line: "from the height of the day."

From the study of Isaiah 32:15

Range of meaning

Height, a high place, a lofty position, and especially the heavenly height where God dwells.

Against the English

'From on high' (BSB, KJV, WEB, ESV, NIV) is accurate. NLT's 'from heaven' spells out the sense.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 33:5 ('the LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high'), 57:15 ('I dwell in the high and holy place'), Ps 102:19, Jer 25:30. LXX renders it here as aph' hypsēlou, 'from on high.'

Where it appears

Judges · 1
  1. Judges 5:18 מְרוֹמֵ֥י [the] heights of

Zebulun was a people who risked their lives; Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield.

Here: 'Heights of,' meaning elevated, exposed or commanding ground. This is not the word for the hilltop shrines that English Bibles also call 'high places' (that word is bamah).

2 Samuel · 1
  1. 2 Samuel 22:17 מִמָּר֖וֹם from a high place

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.

Here: "From the height," meaning God's heavenly dwelling, the high throne from which he came down in the storm of verses 8–16. It sets up the contrast between the highest height and the deepest waters.

2 Kings · 2
  1. 2 Kings 19:22 מָר֛וֹם height

Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!

Here: 'On high.' The word suggests haughtiness, and it is also the word for the heavenly height where God lives (Isaiah 57:15; Psalm 93:4). The king's gaze reaches into God's own domain.

  2. 2 Kings 19:23 מְר֥וֹם [the] height[s] of

Through your servants you have taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its cypresses. I have reached its farthest outposts, the densest of its forests.

Job · 5
  1. Job 5:11 לְמָר֑וֹם to a high place

He sets the lowly on high, so that mourners are lifted to safety.

Here: "To the height": a raised, honoured, out-of-reach place. Elsewhere the same word names God's own high dwelling, so the low are lifted toward the place where God himself is.

  2. Job 16:19 בַּמְּרוֹמִֽים׃ [is] in <the> high places

Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.

  3. Job 25:2 בִּמְרוֹמָֽיו׃ in heights his

“Dominion and awe belong to God; He establishes harmony in the heights of heaven.

  5. Job 39:18 בַּמָּר֣וֹם on the height

Yet when she proudly spreads her wings, she laughs at the horse and its rider.

Psalms · 13
  1. Psalm 7:7 לַמָּר֥וֹם to the height

Let the assembled peoples gather around You; take Your seat over them on high.

  2. Psalm 10:5 מָר֣וֹם [are] height

He is secure in his ways at all times; Your lofty judgments are far from him; he sneers at all his foes.

Here: Used as a predicate, 'on high [are].' God's judgments sit far above, in heaven's height. It answers the 'height of his nose' (his pride) in v. 4: he looks down his nose, but God's justice is higher still, above his line of sight.

  3. Psalm 18:16 מִ֭מָּרוֹם from a high place

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.

Here: 'From the height': the heavenly dwelling of God from which he came down in the storm of vv. 9–14. The reach spans the whole distance from the top of the universe to the bottom of the waters.

  4. Psalm 56:2 מָרֽוֹם׃ height

My enemies pursue me all day long, for many proudly assail me.

Here: Literally "height." Readers have taken it as "from on high, haughtily" (describing how the enemies fight), as "O Most High" (calling on God), or as the first word of verse 3. The grammar does not settle it.

  5. Psalm 68:18 לַמָּר֨וֹם׀ to the height

You have ascended on high; You have led captives away. You have received gifts from men, even from the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there.

Here: 'To the height.' The word means a high place: a mountain summit, or the heavens as God's dwelling. In context the height is the mountain God 'desired for his dwelling' (v.16), which is Zion and its sanctuary (vv.17, 24, 29). That earthly height is pictured as the seat of heaven's King.

  6. Psalm 71:19 מָ֫ר֥וֹם [the] height

Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You?

Here: 'The height', the topmost place, which in Psalms often means God's own dwelling on high. God's saving justice goes up as far as anything can go. It is the opposite of the 'depths of the earth' in v. 20.

  7. Psalm 73:8 מִמָּר֥וֹם from a high place

They mock and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.

Here: 'From the height'. The word is often used for heaven, where God dwells. The picture is of people speaking down to others as if from a throne, as if they sat where God sits. This prepares for v. 9, 'they set their mouths in the heavens'.

  8. Psalm 75:5 לַמָּר֣וֹם to the height

Do not lift up your horn against heaven or speak with an outstretched neck.’”

Here: "To the height". Either "high" (arrogantly raised) or, more pointedly, "toward heaven": up into God's own space, as a challenge. Both senses are possible, and the second is well attested (see studies).

  9. Psalm 92:8 מָר֗וֹם [are] height

But You, O LORD, are exalted forever!

  10. Psalm 93:4 בַּמָּר֣וֹם in the height[s]

Above the roar of many waters—the mighty breakers of the sea—the LORD on high is majestic.

  11. Psalm 102:19 מִמְּר֣וֹם from [the] height of

For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary; the LORD gazed out from heaven to earth

Here: 'From the height of.' A common term for the upper realm where God is enthroned (Isa 57:15; Jer 25:30). It stresses how far God has to look, and so how much it means that he does look.

  12. Psalm 144:7 מִמָּ֫ר֥וֹם from a high place

Reach down from on high; set me free and rescue me from the deep waters, from the grasp of foreigners,

Here: 'From the height', meaning heaven, God's throne-room above the world. The rescue reaches down across the full distance between heaven and the flood below.

  13. Psalm 148:1 בַּמְּרוֹמִֽים׃ in the heights

Hallelujah! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the highest places.

Here: 'In the high places/heights'. This is a poetic parallel to 'the heavens' that names the uppermost reaches where God's court is pictured. Whoever lives up there is told to praise.

Proverbs · 3
  1. Proverbs 8:2 מְרוֹמִ֥ים [the] heights

On the heights overlooking the road, at the crossroads she takes her stand.

Here: Elevated ground, here most naturally the raised parts of a town where everyone can see and hear (compare 9:3, "the heights of the city"). It is not the word for cult shrines (bamot).

  2. Proverbs 9:3 מְרֹ֣מֵי [the] heights of

She has sent out her maidservants; she calls out from the heights of the city.

Here: The heights of: the raised parts of a town, where everyone can see and hear. This is an ordinary word for height, not the word for pagan hilltop shrines (bamah).

  3. Proverbs 9:14 מְרֹ֣מֵי [the] heights of

She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the heights of the city,

Ecclesiastes · 1
  1. Ecclesiastes 10:6 בַּמְּרוֹמִ֖ים in <the> high places

Folly is appointed to great heights, but the rich sit in lowly positions.

Isaiah · 16
  1. Isaiah 22:16 מָרוֹם֙ high place

What are you doing here, and who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here—to chisel your tomb in the height and cut your resting place in the rock?

  2. Isaiah 24:4 מְר֥וֹם [the] noble[s] of

The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and fades; the exalted of the earth waste away.

  3. Isaiah 24:18 מִמָּרוֹם֙ from a high place

Whoever flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are open, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.

  4. Isaiah 24:21 הַמָּר֖וֹם בַּמָּר֑וֹם the height, in the height[s]

In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven above and the kings of the earth below.

Here: 'The height' is the exalted upper region, the sky. 'Host of the height' is a variant of the more common 'host of heaven.'

  5. Isaiah 26:5 מָר֔וֹם a high place

For He has humbled those who dwell on high; He lays the lofty city low. He brings it down to the ground; He casts it into the dust.

Here: The height where the city stands, both a literal hilltop or citadel and its proud, exalted status. Elsewhere in Isaiah, marom is the place God himself dwells (Isa 33:5; 57:15).

  6. Isaiah 32:15 מִמָּר֑וֹם from a high place

until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high. Then the desert will be an orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest.

Here: 'From the height': from where God lives. Isaiah uses mārôm for God's dwelling (33:5; 57:15). The source of the renewal is entirely outside the people.

  7. Isaiah 33:5 מָר֑וֹם a high place

The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high; He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness.

Here: 'The height': the heavenly realm above, and in Isaiah it also echoes Zion's own height as God's mountain. It is used here without 'in' ('dwelling the height'), a normal Hebrew way of naming where someone lives.

  8. Isaiah 33:16 מְרוֹמִ֣ים high places

he will dwell on the heights; the mountain fortress will be his refuge; his food will be provided and his water assured.

Here: 'Heights', put before the verb for emphasis. The same word was just used of God in v. 5, who 'dwells on high' (shokhen marom); the upright person is given a place where God himself lives.

  9. Isaiah 37:23 מָר֛וֹם height

Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!

Here: 'On high.' It works like an adverb (lifting the eyes 'heightward'), which is why BSB renders it 'in pride.' The same word is used for God's own dwelling, and in the next verse for the 'heights' Sennacherib boasts of climbing.

  10. Isaiah 37:24 מְר֥וֹם מְר֣וֹם [the] height[s] of, [to the] height of

Through your servants you have taunted the Lord, and you have said: “With my many chariots I have ascended to the heights of the mountains, to the remote peaks of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the finest of its cypresses. I have reached its farthest heights, the densest of its forests.

Here: The highest summit. The same word ends v. 23, where the king 'lifted your eyes on high' against the Holy One. His physical climb mirrors his arrogant climb.

  11. Isaiah 38:14 לַמָּר֔וֹם to the height[s]

I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security.”

Here: 'The height' is where God lives (Isa 33:5; 57:15). Looking 'to the height' means looking to God for help. The thought is that his eyes have worn out from looking up.

  12. Isaiah 40:26 מָר֨וֹם height

Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these? He leads forth the starry host by number; He calls each one by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.

Here: 'To the height', that is, upward to the sky. In Isaiah the 'height' is also where God himself dwells (57:15), so the gaze is directed toward the realm the stars share with their Maker.

  13. Isaiah 57:15 מָר֥וֹם a high place

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and humble in spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite.

Here: "Height", used here for God's heavenly dwelling. Placed first for emphasis: "On high... I dwell." It comes from the same root as "High One" earlier in the verse.

  14. Isaiah 58:4 בַּמָּר֖וֹם in the height[s]

You fast with contention and strife to strike viciously with your fist. You cannot fast as you do today and have your voice be heard on high.

Jeremiah · 5
  1. Jeremiah 17:12 מָר֖וֹם a high place

A glorious throne, exalted from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary.

Here: A noun, 'height', set next to 'throne' as a second description: the throne is a height, raised up. In Jeremiah it can mean the heavenly heights (25:30) or the height of Zion (31:12). The temple mount and heaven overlap here.

  2. Jeremiah 25:30 מִמָּר֤וֹם from a high place

So you are to prophesy all these words against them and say to them: ‘The LORD will roar from on high; He will raise His voice from His holy habitation. He will roar loudly over His pasture; like those who tread the grapes, He will call out with a shout against all the inhabitants of the earth.

Here: 'From on high.' Usually heaven, God's throne-room (Isa 57:15; Ps 102:19), but Jeremiah 17:12 also calls the temple's site a 'throne on high', so both heaven and Zion may be in view.

  3. Jeremiah 31:12 בִמְרוֹם־ on [the] height of

They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will be radiant over the bounty of the LORD—the grain, new wine, and oil, and the young of the flocks and herds. Their life will be like a well-watered garden, and never again will they languish.

Here: "On the height of." The summit of Zion, the temple mount, the high point pilgrims 'go up' to (v. 6).

  4. Jeremiah 49:16 מְר֣וֹם [the] height[s] of

The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks, O occupiers of the mountain summit. Though you elevate your nest like the eagle, even from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.

Here: 'The height of.' Often used for the heavens as God's own 'on high' (e.g. Isa 57:15). It hints that Edom's altitude is a kind of claim to a place that belongs to God.

  5. Jeremiah 51:53 מְר֣וֹם [the] height of

Even if Babylon ascends to the heavens and fortifies her lofty stronghold, the destroyers I send will come against her,” declares the LORD.

Here: "The height of." A lofty place; the same word is often used for God's own dwelling "on high," so it keeps the heaven-climbing image going.

Lamentations · 1
  1. Lamentations 1:13 מִמָּר֛וֹם from a high place

He sent fire from on high, and it overpowered my bones. He spread a net for my feet and turned me back. He made me desolate, faint all the day long.

Here: 'From the height', meaning heaven, where God lives. The blow comes from above, from God himself, not from chance or only from human enemies. Its first letter, mem, is this verse's place in the alphabet poem.

Ezekiel · 3
  1. Ezekiel 17:23 מְר֤וֹם [the] height of

I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel so that it will bear branches; it will yield fruit and become a majestic cedar. Birds of every kind will nest under it, taking shelter in the shade of its branches.

Here: 'Height' or 'exalted place.' Elsewhere the word can mean heaven itself. Joined to 'mountain,' it gives Israel's lofty mountain, which Ezekiel 20:40 identifies as 'my holy mountain.'

  2. Ezekiel 20:40 מְר֣וֹם [the] height of

For on My holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your offerings and choice gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices.

Here: 'The height of Israel.' This is Zion/Jerusalem, raised up in honour. The word is not bamah, the term for the local 'high places' Ezekiel condemns (v.29). Yet the picture of height deliberately takes over and replaces the many hilltop shrines.

  3. Ezekiel 34:14 מְרֽוֹם־ [the] height of

I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in a good grazing land; they will feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.

Obadiah · 1
  1. Obadiah 1:3 מְר֣וֹם [the] height of

The pride of your heart has deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks whose habitation is the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

Here: 'The height of': elevation. The word can also mean 'on high' in the sense of heaven, which prepares for verse 4's 'among the stars'.

Micah · 1
  1. Micah 6:6 מָר֑וֹם height

With what shall I come before the LORD when I bow before the God on high? Should I come to Him with burnt offerings, with year-old calves?

Here: 'The height.' The God of the heights lives in the lofty heavens, and that sharpens the contrast with the worshiper bent low. It stresses distance and majesty: how could a mere human reach him?

Habakkuk · 1
  1. Habakkuk 2:9 בַּמָּרוֹם֙ on the high places

Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high and escape the hand of disaster!

Here: 'On the height': a place that is lofty and hard to reach. The word is also used for heaven, where God lives, so it hints that he is reaching for a security and a status that belong to God alone.
