mishneh
second
mishneh comes from the root shanah, 'to repeat, do a second time.' It can mean 'second' in rank (Genesis 41:43, Joseph's 'second chariot'), 'a copy' (Deuteronomy 17:18, a copy of the law), or 'double' (Isaiah 61:7; Jeremiah 16:18). With kesef ('silver') it means a doubled or second sum of silver.

In depth
From the study of Genesis 43:15
- Range of meaning
mishneh comes from the root shanah, 'to repeat, do a second time.' It can mean 'second' in rank (Genesis 41:43, Joseph's 'second chariot'), 'a copy' (Deuteronomy 17:18, a copy of the law), or 'double' (Isaiah 61:7; Jeremiah 16:18). With kesef ('silver') it means a doubled or second sum of silver.
- Against the English
BSB/NIV 'double the amount of silver' and KJV 'double money' both read it as twice the original sum. The phrase could also mean 'a second (fresh) sum of silver,' and the English does not show that possibility.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Jacob's orders in 43:12 are 'take mishneh-silver in your hand, and the silver returned in the mouth of your sacks take back in your hand.' In 43:21–22 the brothers tell the steward they have brought back the returned silver 'and other silver we have brought down to buy food.' That suggests the 'double' is the returned silver plus new money.
- Range of meaning
From the root 'two/repeat'. Its meanings are: (1) second in rank or order (Gen 41:43 'second chariot'; 2 Kgs 23:4 'priests of the second order'); (2) a copy or duplicate (Deut 17:18, 'a copy of this law'); (3) double, twice as much (Gen 43:12, 15 'double money'; Job 42:10 'the LORD gave Job twice as much'; Zech 9:12 'I will restore to you double'). In the prophets it often appears in a context of repayment: Jer 16:18 'I will repay double their iniquity'; Jer 17:18 'destroy them with double destruction'.
- Against the English
BSB, NIV, ESV and NASB say "double portion". The noun 'portion' is supplied. The first clause has only "double", and the word for portion (ḥeleq) sits in a different clause. KJV and WEB keep the bare "double". YLT reads it as "a second time", in line with the Greek.
- How it drifted
In church English, "double portion" is strongly tied to Elisha asking for a 'double portion' of Elijah's spirit (2 Kgs 2:9) and to the firstborn's inheritance (Deut 21:17). Both of those passages use a different Hebrew phrase, pi shenayim (literally "mouth/measure of two"), not mishneh. Translating both with the same English phrase makes the passages sound connected when the Hebrew does not connect them.
- Used elsewhere in the period
In the Hebrew Bible it means double money (Gen 43), double restoration (Job 42:10; Zech 9:12) and double punishment (Jer 16:18; 17:18). The Old Greek translates our verse with ek deuteras, "a second time". The Vulgate attaches "double" to the shame ("your double confusion").
From the study of Jeremiah 16:18
- Range of meaning
From the root shnh 'to repeat, do a second time.' Its senses are: (1) second in rank (Gen 41:43, 'second chariot'; 2 Kgs 23:4, 'priests of the second order'); (2) a copy or duplicate (Deut 17:18, mishneh ha-torah, 'a copy of this law'); (3) double, twice the amount (Gen 43:12, 15, 'double money'; Exod 16:22, 'double bread'; Job 42:10).
- Against the English
Nearly all English versions say 'double' or 'doubly.' YLT reads it as 'a second time.' A minority of scholars would render it 'the equivalent of' or 'in full.'
- How it drifted
Modern English 'double' means exactly two times, a strict arithmetic multiple. Readers can then conclude that God punishes twice as much as the crime deserves. The Hebrew range is wider: 'double,' 'duplicate,' and 'second' all overlap.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Jeremiah uses the word again in the next chapter: 'destroy them with double destruction' (mishneh shibbaron, 17:18). Isaiah 40:2 says Jerusalem has received 'double (kiflayim) for all her sins.' Isaiah 61:7 and Zechariah 9:12 turn the idea around and promise a 'double' portion of restoration. In the Exodus laws on restitution a thief 'shall pay double' (shnayim yeshallem, Exod 22:4, 7, 9 [Heb 22:3, 6, 8]), using the same verb shillem. Revelation 18:6 ('pay her back double') echoes this prophetic language.

Genesis 43:15 וּמִשְׁנֶה־ and double

Here: From the root for 'two' or 'repeat.' Linked to "silver," it means a doubled amount, or a second sum of silver, as Jacob ordered in 43:12. Most likely this is the silver returned in their sacks plus fresh money for new grain.

Here: 'Second' in rank: the priests just below the chief priest. Elsewhere one officer is called 'the second priest' (25:18), so the original may have meant that one deputy.

Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion, and instead of humiliation, they will rejoice in their share; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs.
Here: "Double." The clause has no verb: "instead of your shame — double!" Here it means a twofold measure of good repaid in place of disgrace. The word 'portion' is not in this clause.
Jeremiah · 3
-
Jeremiah 16:18 מִשְׁנֵ֤ה [the] double of
And I will first repay them double their iniquity and their sin, because they have defiled My land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and they have filled My inheritance with their abominations.”
Here: 'The double of' or 'the duplicate of' their guilt. The word can mean twice the amount or a matching copy. Which one is meant here is debated (see studies).
-
Jeremiah 17:18 וּמִשְׁנֶ֥ה and double
Let my persecutors be put to shame, but do not let me be put to shame. Let them be terrified, but do not let me be terrified. Bring upon them the day of disaster and shatter them with double destruction.
Here: 'And a double (measure).' It repeats God's own words in 16:18: 'I will repay double (mišneh) their iniquity.' It also suggests the full penalty of Israel's law, where a thief paid back double. So Jeremiah is asking for the full sentence God has already announced.
-
Jeremiah 52:24 הַמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה the second rank
The captain of the guard also took away Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the priest of second rank, and the three doorkeepers.

Here: Literally 'the Second'. This was the name of Jerusalem's newer district, where Huldah the prophetess lived in this same generation (2 Kgs 22:14). It was a residential area of the well-off, not a gate or a field.

-
Zechariah 9:12 מִשְׁנֶ֖ה double
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; even today I declare that I will restore to you double.
Here: 'Double', meaning twice the amount. It is placed first in its clause for emphasis. The idea is compensation that more than makes up for the loss, as in Isaiah 61:7, 'instead of your shame, a double portion'.
