Range of meaning

A personal name made of ʿam ("kinsman, paternal relative"; later also "people"), the suffix -î ("my") and hôd ("splendour, majesty"). It is usually read as "my kinsman is splendour" or "my kinsman is majestic", where "kinsman" refers to God as the family's divine relative.

Against the English

English simply writes the name. Readers miss that the name is a statement of faith.

Used elsewhere in the period

Names built on ʿam are common in early Hebrew and other West Semitic languages (Ammiel, Amminadab, Ammishaddai; Amorite Ammi-names in the Mari texts). In Ammi-names the ʿam element often has the older sense of a clan's divine kinsman. Ammihud is the name of several men: the father of Elishama of Ephraim (Num 1:10), a Simeonite (Num 34:20), a Naphtalite (Num 34:28), and the father of a king of Geshur (2 Sam 13:37).
