In depth

From the study of Ezekiel 16:11

Range of meaning

Bracelet or bangle worn on the wrist or arm. A related word means a fastening or cover, so the basic idea may be something clasped on.

Against the English

KJV/WEB "bracelets upon thy hands" is literal. BSB/ESV-type "on your wrists" says where bracelets actually sit. Some versions say "arms." All are fine.

Used elsewhere in the period

Genesis 24:22, 30, 47: Abraham's servant gives Rebekah a gold nose-ring and two gold bracelets for her hands. His own report is: "I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her hands" (Gen 24:47). Numbers 31:50 lists bracelets among gold spoils dedicated to the LORD. Bangles of bronze, silver and gold are common finds in Iron Age Levantine burials.

From the study of Genesis 24:22

Range of meaning

A bracelet or bangle. It probably relates to a verb meaning 'to bind' or 'fasten on', and Numbers 19:15 uses the same word for a lid fastened onto a jar.

Against the English

'Bracelets' is accurate across English versions. The difference a modern reader may miss is scale, and NLT brings this out by adding the word 'large'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Listed with other gold valuables in Numbers 31:50. Ezekiel 16:11 and 23:42 place bracelets on women's hands as signs of luxury and adornment.

From the study of Genesis 24:30

Range of meaning

A bracelet or armlet. The root means 'fasten' or 'bind' (compare 'a fastened cover' in Num 19:15). It is jewellery that clasps around the arm.

Against the English

'Bracelets' is accurate. Where the bracelets sit ('hands', 'wrists', 'arms') depends on how a version renders yad.

Used elsewhere in the period

Num 31:50 (gold armlets among war spoil given to the LORD); Ezek 16:11 and 23:42 (bracelets on a bride's or a woman's hands).
