- Range of meaning
Shalmaneser V (Akkadian Shulmanu-ashared, "Shulmanu is foremost"), king of Assyria and Babylonia from 727 to 722 BC. He was the son of Tiglath-pileser III, who had made Israel a vassal state.
- Against the English
English versions all keep the name. Readers may not realise that four Assyrian kings with this name are known, and this one is the fifth.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Very few royal inscriptions from his short reign survive. The Babylonian Chronicle (Grayson, Chronicle 1 i 27–28) says he "ravaged Šamaraʾin" before his death in 722 BC. His successor Sargon II later claimed to have conquered Samaria (see debates). Josephus (Antiquities 9.283–287) quotes Menander of Tyre on a Shalmaneser campaign in Phoenicia in these same years.
