In depth

From the study of John 3:31

Range of meaning

'Epanō' means on top of, above, over. It can also mean more than (1 Cor 15:6, 'more than five hundred'). With a genitive it means 'over' in rank or authority. 'Pantōn' is 'all' and can be masculine (all people) or neuter (all things).

Against the English

'Above all' is accurate, but in English it can sound like the idiom 'most importantly'. The Greek is a statement of rank: he is over everyone and everything.

How it drifted

The English idiom 'above all' ('chiefly') can blur the spatial-and-rank picture.

Used elsewhere in the period

Similar phrasing appears in Romans 9:5 ('ho ōn epi pantōn', 'who is over all'). The immediate context gives 3:35: 'The Father loves the Son and has given all things (panta) into his hand.'

From the study of Matthew 21:7

Range of meaning

ἐπάνω: above, on top of. αὐτῶν: genitive plural pronoun, "them" or "of them." In this form it is identical for masculine and neuter.

Against the English

BSB, WEB and ESV keep the ambiguous "on them." NASB resolves it as "on the coats" and NIV as cloaks laid "for Jesus to sit on." Others have him sit on the animal.

Used elsewhere in the period

Greek generally ties a pronoun to the closest suitable noun. Here that is τὰ ἱμάτια (the cloaks, neuter). The supplied tagging (masculine, i.e., the animals) is one interpretation; the form itself does not decide it.

From the study of Matthew 23:20

Range of meaning

Above, over, on top of. With a genitive noun it means 'on top of' something.

Against the English

'Everything on it' is accurate. The modern reader needs to know what was actually on the altar: offerings, meaning sacrificial animals, grain and other gifts, burning in the fire.

Used elsewhere in the period

Common in the Septuagint and the New Testament for physical position (e.g., Matt 2:9, the star 'over' the place; Matt 27:37, the charge 'above' Jesus' head).
