In depth

From the study of Luke 4:38

Range of meaning

Mother-in-law: either a wife's mother or a husband's mother, depending on context.

Against the English

Modern versions say "mother-in-law", and the KJV says "wife's mother". The KJV spells out the relationship the context requires, and all are accurate.

Used elsewhere in the period

The parallels in Mark 1:30 and Matthew 8:14 use the same word. Luke 12:53 and Matthew 10:35 use it for tensions within a family. In the Greek Old Testament's Ruth, it describes Naomi as Ruth's mother-in-law (the husband's mother, Ruth 1:14).

From the study of Matthew 8:14

Range of meaning

'Mother-in-law.' Usually the wife's mother, though the word can also mean a husband's mother. Its masculine counterpart is pentheros, father-in-law. In this verse it plainly means the mother of Peter's wife.

Against the English

'Mother-in-law' and the KJV's 'wife's mother' are both accurate. The KJV phrase makes explicit what the Greek implies: Peter had a wife.

Used elsewhere in the period

The same word appears in Matthew 10:35 and Luke 12:53, where Jesus warns that he will divide a household, setting 'daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law' (quoting Micah 7:6). Paul confirms that Cephas (Peter) traveled with a believing wife (1 Corinthians 9:5).
