In depth

From the study of Matthew 24:30

Range of meaning

Phylē: tribe, clan, people group. In the Greek Old Testament it is overwhelmingly used of the twelve tribes of Israel. Gē: earth, ground, land, or a particular country. 'The land' often means the land of Israel.

Against the English

Most versions have 'all the tribes of the earth'. The NIV and NLT have 'peoples of the earth', which settles the question in favour of a worldwide sense. 'All the tribes of the land' (Israel's tribes) is equally possible grammatically.

Used elsewhere in the period

Genesis 12:3 and 28:14 (Greek): 'in you all the tribes of the earth (πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς) will be blessed', which is worldwide. Zechariah 12:12–14: 'the land (ἡ γῆ) will mourn, tribe by tribe', meaning the clans of Jerusalem and Judah. Matthew 19:28: 'judging the twelve tribes of Israel'.

From the study of Revelation 1:7

Range of meaning

φυλή means a tribe or clan, a group bound by descent: the twelve tribes of Israel, or peoples in general. γῆ means earth, land, ground, or a particular country.

Against the English

BSB, ESV, NASB and WEB have 'tribes of the earth'; KJV has 'kindreds'; YLT has 'tribes of the land'. NIV and NLT have 'peoples/nations', which reads smoothly but loses the word 'tribes' and the echoes it carries.

How it drifted

Modern 'tribe' can suggest only small ethnic groups, and 'earth' sounds like the planet. Here the phrase deliberately joins two Old Testament texts.

Used elsewhere in the period

Zech 12:12 Hebrew: מִשְׁפָּחוֹת (mishpāchôt, 'clans') of 'the land' (hāʾāretz), meaning the clans of Judah and Jerusalem. The exact Greek phrase πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς appears in LXX Gen 12:3 and 28:14: 'in you all the tribes of the earth will be blessed.' Matthew 24:30 has the same wording.

From the study of James 1:1

Range of meaning

A tribe or clan, a body of people with a shared ancestor. 'The twelve tribes' is a fixed expression for all Israel, the descendants of Jacob's twelve sons.

Against the English

English 'tribes' is accurate. A modern reader may hear only a historical or ethnic label and miss the hope it carried: in the first century the ten northern tribes had been scattered for centuries, and 'the twelve tribes' meant Israel as God intended it to be, restored and whole.

Used elsewhere in the period

Restoration hope: Ezek 37:15–28; 47–48; Sirach 36:10 (gather 'all the tribes of Jacob'); Psalms of Solomon 17:26–28, 44; the War Scroll from Qumran (1QM 2:2–3) organises the end-time community by twelve tribes. Jesus' twelve disciples will judge 'the twelve tribes of Israel' (Matt 19:28; Luke 22:30); Paul says 'our twelve tribes' hope for the promise (Acts 26:7); Rev 7:4–8; 21:12. Josephus says the ten tribes still lived 'beyond the Euphrates' in huge numbers (Ant. 11.133).
