Range of meaning

A personal name from the root y-sh-ʿ, 'to save, deliver, give victory'. It is usually read as 'salvation' or '(Yahweh) has saved'. Some read it as a plea, 'save!'.

Against the English

'Hosea' comes into English from the Greek and Latin forms (Ōsēe, Osee). Those forms hide that his name is the same as Joshua's original name and the name of Israel's last king, Hoshea son of Elah.

Used elsewhere in the period

Num 13:8, 16: Hoshea son of Nun, whom Moses renamed Yehoshua, Joshua. 2 Kgs 15:30; 17:1–6: Hoshea, last king of Israel. The same root gives Yeshua, the name behind 'Jesus'.

Here: Hoshea son of Elah was the last king of the northern kingdom. The Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser III claims to have put him on the throne. His name means 'salvation' or 'he has saved', and it is the same name as the prophet Hosea's. By this point Hoshea was already a prisoner (17:4).

Hosea · 3
  1. Hosea 1:1 הוֹשֵׁ֙עַ֙ Hosea

This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and of Jeroboam son of Jehoash, king of Israel.

Here: The prophet's name, from the Hebrew root for 'save, rescue'. It means something like 'salvation' or '(God) has saved'. Joshua's name before Moses changed it (Num 13:16) and the name of Israel's last king (2 Kgs 15:30) are the same name.

  2. Hosea 1:2 בְּהוֹשֵׁ֑עַ פ הוֹשֵׁ֗עַ by Hosea, Hosea

When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, He told him, “Go, take a prostitute as your wife and have children of adultery, because this land is flagrantly prostituting itself by departing from the LORD.”

Here: The preposition bə can mean 'through' (Hosea as the channel, as in Num 12:2; 2 Sam 23:2) or 'with/to' (God speaking to him). 'Through' fits the heading. The name Hōšēaʿ means 'He has saved' or 'salvation'. The Masoretes (the medieval scribes who fixed the vowels and markings of the Hebrew text) put a paragraph mark (פ) here, which sets this clause apart as a heading.
