In depth
From the study of Isaiah 44:11
- Range of meaning
A skilled worker: a smith, carpenter, stone-cutter, engraver. It comes from a root meaning 'to cut in, engrave, work (material)'.
- Against the English
KJV/WEB 'workmen', YLT 'artisans', BSB/ESV/NASB 'craftsmen'. All are fair. 'Workmen' sounds more like general labour than the skilled trades meant here.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Isa 40:19–20 and 41:7, where craftsmen build and fasten idols; Isa 44:12–13, the ironsmith (ḥāraš barzel) and the woodworker (ḥāraš ʿēṣîm); Isa 45:16, 'makers of idols'; Deut 27:15, 'cursed is the one who makes a carved image... the work of a craftsman's hands'. Spelled with different vowels, the same consonants form ḥērēš, 'deaf' (Isa 29:18; 35:5; 42:18), and the Greek Septuagint read it that way here.
From the study of Isaiah 45:16
- Range of meaning
A craftsman or artisan who works wood, stone or metal: carpenter, smith, engraver. In Isaiah 40–48 it is used specifically for the professionals who make cult images.
- Against the English
'Makers of idols' (BSB, KJV, ESV, NIV) gets the function right but loses the trade. Isaiah points at skilled workmen, people with tools and a craft, which is what makes the satire bite. YLT's 'those carving images' keeps the workshop in view.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The word is used for honourable crafts, such as the tabernacle artisans (Exodus 35:35) and Hiram's carpenters and masons (2 Samuel 5:11). In Isaiah it turns ironic: 40:19–20 (the craftsman who must make sure the idol 'will not totter'), 41:7 (craftsman encouraging goldsmith), and 44:11–13, where 'the craftsmen are only human' and grow hungry and tired while making a god.
From the study of 1 Chronicles 29:5
- Range of meaning
Craftsmen or artisans who cut or engrave: metalsmiths, carpenters, stonemasons (Exod 35:35; 2 Sam 5:11; 1 Chr 14:1; 22:15). Sometimes used for idol-makers (Isa 40:19–20; 44:11–12).
- Against the English
'Craftsmen' or 'artificers' is accurate.
- Used elsewhere in the period
1 Chr 22:15 lists the large workforce David gathered: stonecutters, masons, carpenters and every kind of skilled worker. 1 Chr 14:1 mentions Hiram's Tyrian craftsmen.
