Range of meaning

"He establishes" or "he will make firm," from the verb kûn, "to be firm, set up." It is used for several individuals (a son of Simeon, Gen 46:10), for a priestly rotation, and for the right-hand bronze pillar of Solomon's temple.

Against the English

KJV, WEB, YLT and BSB spell it "Jachin"; some modern versions spell it "Jakin." The spelling makes no difference to the meaning. Neither spelling tells the reader that this was a priestly family name.

Used elsewhere in the period

1 Chr 24:17 (21st rotation). 1 Chr 9:10 (with Jedaiah and Jehoiarib, as here). 1 Kgs 7:21 and 2 Chr 3:17 (the pillar). It is also attested in the Qumran priestly rotation calendars.

It is also the name of the 21st priestly rotation (1 Chr 24:17), and the same word named one of the two bronze pillars at Solomon's temple (1 Kgs 7:21). The Hebrew accents set it apart from "Jedaiah son of Joiarib," so it reads as a separate entry in the list.
