In depth

From the study of Isaiah 11:1

Range of meaning

A personal name: Jesse son of Obed, of Bethlehem in Judah, father of David (Ruth 4:17–22; 1 Sam 16).

Against the English

English versions keep 'Jesse', except NLT, which paraphrases it as David's family. That gives the right lineage but loses Isaiah's deliberate choice to go back one generation before David.

Used elsewhere in the period

'Son of Jesse' was sometimes said with contempt about David by rivals (1 Sam 20:27–31; 22:7–9; 25:10; 1 Kgs 12:16), meaning he was a nobody from a farming family. Isaiah 11:10 calls the coming figure 'the root of Jesse', and that phrase is taken up in Rom 15:12 and echoed in Rev 5:5 and 22:16 ('the Root of David').

From the study of 1 Chronicles 2:12

Range of meaning

The name of David's father, of obscure origin. Proposals include a link with ʾîš 'man' (the spelling ʾîšay in v.13 suggests something like 'man of [YH]'), or with yēš 'there is, existence'. None is established.

Against the English

'Jesse' comes through the Greek Iessai and Latin Isai. The English cannot show that the Hebrew spells the name two different ways in v.12 and v.13.

Used elsewhere in the period

1 Sam 16–17; Ruth 4:17, 22; 1 Chr 2:12–13; Isa 11:1, 10 ('shoot from the stump of Jesse'); Matt 1:5–6; Luke 3:32; Acts 13:22. 'Son of Jesse' is sometimes used of David dismissively (1 Sam 20:27–31; 22:7–9; 2 Sam 20:1).

Isaiah · 2
  1. Isaiah 11:1 יִשָׁ֑י Jesse

Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.

Here: David's father, a farmer of Bethlehem (1 Sam 16–17). Isaiah says 'Jesse', not 'David'. He goes back past the royal house to its humble root, which suggests a new beginning like David's rather than a continuation of the current kings' glory.

On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.
