What it means

chariot

Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Joshua 11:6

Range of meaning

'Chariot', from rkb, 'to ride/mount'. It means a war chariot or state chariot. Later the same word is used for God's throne-chariot in Jewish tradition (merkavah mysticism, based on Ezekiel 1 and 1 Chr 28:18).

Against the English

'Chariots' is accurate. Readers may picture heavy carriages; these were light, fast platforms for archers.

Used elsewhere in the period

Late Bronze Age Canaanite city-states built their armies around chariots driven by an elite class. The Amarna letters (14th century BC) show Canaanite rulers asking Pharaoh for horses and chariots. Thutmose III claimed 924 chariots captured at Megiddo. Josh 17:16–18 and Judg 1:19; 4:3 show Israel's fear of 'iron chariots' on the plains.

From the study of Haggai 2:22

Range of meaning

Merkavah means chariot, or chariotry as a group. Sus means horse. Rokhev, the participle of rakhav 'to ride', means a rider, a charioteer, or a chariot crew.

Against the English

English versions render these accurately. The issue is that English readers usually miss the quotation: 'horse and its rider' is the refrain of the Song of the Sea.

Used elsewhere in the period

Exodus 14:23–28 (Pharaoh's chariots and horsemen drowned) and Exodus 15:1, 21 ('horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea'). Prophets set horses and chariots against trust in YHWH (Isaiah 31:1; Psalm 20:7; Zechariah 9:10, 'I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem'). Chariots and cavalry were the core of Assyrian, Babylonian and Persian armies.

From the study of Zechariah 6:1

Range of meaning

A wheeled vehicle drawn by horses: the war chariot, the state chariot of kings and high officials, and by extension a sign of military might. Related to the verb רָכַב "to ride, mount" and the collective noun רֶכֶב "chariotry".

Against the English

"Chariot" is accurate. Modern readers may picture a racing or ceremonial cart, but in the Iron Age and Persian period the chariot was the tank or fighter jet of its day, the costliest and most frightening unit in an army.

Used elsewhere in the period

Pharaoh's chariots (Exod 14:25; 15:4); Joseph rides in Pharaoh's second chariot (Gen 41:43); Solomon's chariot cities (1 Kgs 10:26 uses rekev). God's own chariots: Hab 3:8 ("your chariots of salvation"), Ps 68:17 (rekev). 1 Chr 28:18 calls the cherubim over the ark "the chariot"; Sirach 49:8 says Ezekiel saw "the chariot". The Dead Sea Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice (4Q405) speak of heavenly merkavot. Later Jewish mysticism took "merkavah" as its name, but that came long after Zechariah. Josiah removed "the chariots of the sun" from the Jerusalem temple (2 Kgs 23:11), which shows that the picture of divine chariots coming out at a sacred gateway was familiar in Judah.
