Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Proverbs 22:8

Range of meaning

Injustice, unrighteous conduct, perversity, crooked dealing. It comes from the root '-w-l, 'to act wrongly or unjustly'. It often names wrong done to others: dishonest judgment, oppression, violence. It is the opposite of tsedeq/mishpat ('what is right / justice').

Against the English

BSB, ESV and NIV have 'injustice'. KJV 'iniquity', WEB 'wickedness' and YLT 'perverseness' are broader. They lean toward general sinfulness and lose the social edge of wronging other people.

How it drifted

'Iniquity' in church English has come to mean sin in general, often personal guilt before God. The Hebrew word points mainly at crooked treatment of others.

Used elsewhere in the period

Lev 19:15 forbids 'avel ('injustice') in judgment, meaning partiality in court. In Hos 10:13, 'you plowed wickedness, you reaped injustice ('avlatah)', the same farming picture appears. Ps 58:2 speaks of hearts that 'work injustice' in the land. In Job 6:29–30 the word stands for unfair treatment.

From the study of Isaiah 61:8

Range of meaning

ʿawlâ: crookedness, wrong, injustice, deviation from what is right (Job 5:16; Ps 37:1; Isa 59:3, 'your tongue mutters ʿawlâ'). ʿōlâ (a different word with identical letters): the 'whole burnt offering', burned entirely on the altar.

Against the English

BSB, ESV, NIV and NLT say 'robbery and iniquity/wrong(doing)'. KJV, YLT and NASB 1995 say 'robbery for/in (the) burnt offering'. Most English readers never learn that the difference comes from vocalising the same Hebrew letters in two ways.

How it drifted

Not drift in the usual sense. This is a real ambiguity in the text. KJV followed the Vulgate's 'in holocausto' and Jewish tradition. Modern versions follow the Greek translation and the parallel with 'injustice'.

Used elsewhere in the period

The contracted spelling ʿōlâ for ʿawlâ is attested (e.g. Job 5:16, וְעֹלָתָה). The Greek translation has 'robbery out of injustice' (ἁρπάγματα ἐξ ἀδικίας). The Vulgate has 'rapinam in holocausto'. The Talmud (b. Sukkah 30a) reads 'robbery in a burnt offering' and tells a parable about a king who pays customs duty himself so that others learn not to evade it.

From the study of Isaiah 59:3

Range of meaning

Injustice, wrongdoing, perversity: departure from what is right and fair, especially in dealings between people. It is the opposite of tsedeq (right order, justice). It is used of unjust judges (Lev 19:15, 'do no 'awel in judgment') and false weights (Lev 19:35).

Against the English

BSB has 'injustice'; KJV and YLT 'perverseness'; WEB, ESV and NASB 'wickedness'; NIV 'wicked things'. BSB best keeps the social and legal sense. 'Wickedness' turns it into a general moral evil.

How it drifted

'Wickedness' and 'perverseness' sound like general badness or, for modern readers, sexual deviance. The Hebrew points specifically at wronging people and twisting what is fair.

Used elsewhere in the period

Lev 19:15, 35; Ps 58:3 (Eng. 58:2), 'in your heart you work 'olot'; Job 6:30, 'is there injustice on my tongue?', where tongue and 'avlah are paired just as here.

Where it appears

Leviticus · 2
  1. Leviticus 19:15 עָ֙וֶל֙ injustice

You must not pervert justice; you must not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the rich; you are to judge your neighbor fairly.

Here: A deviation from what is right: a twisted outcome, a crooked result. The same phrase comes back in 19:35 for false measures, so the picture is a scale that has been tampered with.

  2. Leviticus 19:35 עָ֖וֶל injustice

You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight, or volume.

Here: Twisting what is right, especially in dealings between people. Here it means the concrete fraud of bending a standard to take more than your due.

Deuteronomy · 2
  1. Deuteronomy 25:16 עָֽוֶל׃ פ <of> injustice

For everyone who behaves dishonestly in regard to these things is detestable to the LORD your God.

  2. Deuteronomy 32:4 עָ֔וֶל [is] injustice

He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He.

Here: Unfair dealing, crookedness in judgment or trade (compare Lev 19:15, 35). There is no unfairness at all in God's dealings.

2 Samuel · 2
  1. 2 Samuel 3:34 עַוְלָ֖ה injustice

Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. As a man falls before the wicked, so also you fell.” And all the people wept over him even more.

  2. 2 Samuel 7:10 עַוְלָה֙ injustice

And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the sons of wickedness oppress them as they did at the beginning

Here: 'Injustice.' The word means twisted, unfair dealing, the opposite of what is straight and right. The people in view are defined by the wrong they do to others, which is oppression.

1 Chronicles · 1
  1. 1 Chronicles 17:9 עַוְלָה֙ injustice

And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the sons of wickedness oppress them as they did at the beginning

Here: Unjust, violent wrongdoing. 'Sons of injustice' are oppressors who prey on others: here the raiding and dominating powers that had harassed Israel.

2 Chronicles · 1
  1. 2 Chronicles 19:7 עַוְלָ֛ה [is] injustice

And now, may the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful what you do, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”

Here: Crookedness: twisting what is right, especially unjust dealing. In a court setting it means a perverted verdict.

Job · 12

So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.

  2. Job 6:29 עַוְלָ֑ה injustice

  5. Job 13:7 עַוְלָ֑ה unrighteousness

Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf or speak deceitfully for Him?

Here: The thing they are saying, not the tone they say it in. It is an unjust claim, a crooked verdict, and here the verdict falls on Job. The word belongs to the world of fairness and courts.

  6. Job 15:16 עַוְלָֽה׃ unrighteousness

how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water?

Here: Crooked dealing, injustice: wrong done to others, especially in speech and in judgment. The word is placed last for emphasis, and it is exactly the thing Job has sworn is not on his tongue (6:30; 27:4).

  7. Job 22:23 עַ֝וְלָ֗ה injustice

If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. If you remove injustice from your tents

Here: Unfair, crooked dealing, the opposite of justice (tsedeq). Here it points back to the specific social crimes Eliphaz has just charged Job with in 22:6–9: taking pledges, leaving people naked, refusing water and bread, turning widows and orphans away.

  8. Job 24:20 עַוְלָֽה׃ injustice

The womb forgets them; the worm feeds on them; they are remembered no more. So injustice is broken like a tree.

  11. Job 34:32 עָ֥וֶל unrighteousness

Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’

Here: Wrong of a specific kind: crookedness, an unjust act, a departure from what is right and fair. Earlier in this speech Elihu used the same word for what God never does (34:10).

  12. Job 36:23 עַוְלָֽה׃ unrighteousness

Who has appointed His way for Him, or told Him, ‘You have done wrong’?

Psalms · 12
  1. Psalm 7:3 עָ֥וֶל [is] unrighteousness

O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice is on my hands,

Here: Unfair or unjust dealing that harms another person, such as crooked judgment, cheating or betrayal. It is the opposite of what is straight and fair. This is the sense of the charge: he wronged someone.

  2. Psalm 37:1 עַוְלָֽה׃ <of> unrighteousness

Of David. Do not fret over those who do evil; do not envy those who do wrong.

Here: Dishonest or unjust dealing that bends what is right, especially in how people are treated in court, in business and in the community. Together with the word before it: 'those who practise injustice'.

  3. Psalm 43:1 וְעַוְלָ֣ה and injustice

Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation; deliver me from deceitful and unjust men.

Here: "And wrongdoing." The word is the opposite of what is straight and right. Its relative ʿavel is used for injustice in court (Lev 19:15). Joined to "deceit", it pictures someone who lies and also twists justice.

  4. Psalm 53:1 עָ֝֗וֶל unrighteousness

For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath. A Maskil of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; their ways are vile. There is no one who does good.

Here: Twisting what is right, especially in dealings with other people: unfair, crooked conduct. It names the area of their abhorrent acts: injustice. Verse 4 shows what it looks like: they 'devour my people like bread'.

  5. Psalm 58:2 עוֹלֹ֪ת injustice<s>

No, in your hearts you devise injustice; with your hands you mete out violence on the earth.

Here: The plural means "acts of injustice": crooked dealings that bend what is right. It is the opposite of the "justice" (tsedeq) and "uprightness" (mesharim) named in verse 1.

  6. Psalm 64:6 עוֹלֹ֗ת injustice<s>

They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious.

Here: "Injustices", in the plural. These are specific crooked deeds that twist what is right and fair. It is the object of their search: they hunt for new ways to wrong someone.

  7. Psalm 82:2 עָ֑וֶל injustice

“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah

Here: Grammatically the object of the verb, so literally "you judge injustice": the verdict they hand down is wrong itself. It is the exact word of Lev 19:15, "You shall do no ʿawel in judgment."

  8. Psalm 89:22 עַ֝וְלָ֗ה injustice

No enemy will exact tribute; no wicked man will oppress him.

  9. Psalm 92:15 עַוְלָ֥תָה injustice

to proclaim, “The LORD is upright; He is my Rock, and in Him there is no unrighteousness.”

Here: Unfair or crooked dealing, the kind of wrong a corrupt judge or cheating merchant commits. It has an extra poetic ending (-ah), as in Job 5:16. The claim is that God never deals unjustly. It is not a vague claim about God's general 'sinlessness'.

  10. Psalm 107:42 עַ֝וְלָ֗ה unrighteousness

The upright see and rejoice, and all iniquity shuts its mouth.

Here: Crooked, unjust dealing, especially by the strong against the weak. Here it is pictured as a person with a mouth. It stands for the oppressors of vv. 39–40 and all their talk.

They do no iniquity; they walk in His ways.

  12. Psalm 125:3 בְּעַוְלָ֬תָה in injustice

For the scepter of the wicked will not rest upon the land allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous will not put forth their hands to injustice.

Here: 'To/into wrongdoing'. 'Awlah is unfair, crooked dealing that departs from what is straight. It is given here in an older, lengthened poetic form.

Proverbs · 2
  1. Proverbs 22:8 עַ֭וְלָה unrighteousness

He who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

Here: The seed he sows: crooked dealing, especially wrong done to other people, the opposite of fair and right conduct. Coming right after v.7 (the rich rule the poor), it suggests the abuse of power over the weak.

  2. Proverbs 29:27 עָ֑וֶל injustice

An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and one whose way is upright is detestable to the wicked.

Here: Twisting what is right, especially in judging and trading (false weights, crooked verdicts). Together with the word before it, it describes someone whose dealings are bent.

Isaiah · 2
  1. Isaiah 59:3 עַוְלָ֥ה injustice

For your hands are stained with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters injustice.

  2. Isaiah 61:8 בְּעוֹלָ֑ה with injustice

For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery and iniquity; in My faithfulness I will give them their recompense and make an everlasting covenant with them.

Here: The supplied data reads it as ʿawlâ, 'wrong, crookedness': 'robbery joined with wrongdoing', meaning robbery that is unjust through and through. The same letters can be read 'in a burnt offering' (see the textual notes).

Jeremiah · 1
  1. Jeremiah 2:5 עָ֔וֶל injustice

This is what the LORD says: “What fault did your fathers find in Me that they strayed so far from Me? They followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves.

Here: A crooked or unfair act, the opposite of straight dealing. The question is whether YHWH ever broke faith or treated them unjustly, which would have given them legal grounds to leave.

Ezekiel · 11
  1. Ezekiel 3:20 עָ֔וֶל injustice

Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will hold you responsible for his blood.

Here: The direct opposite of tsedeq: crooked, unjust dealing, often social (cheating, oppressing, perverting judgment).

  2. Ezekiel 18:8 מֵעָ֖וֶל from injustice

He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men.

Here: "From injustice": unfair dealing, especially in lawsuits and in trade (crooked weights, partial verdicts). It is a specific kind of wrong, not sin in general.

  3. Ezekiel 18:24 עָ֔וֶל injustice

But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.

Here: Crooked, unfair dealing, especially in social and legal relations. The righteous man of v. 8 'kept his hand back from 'awel'; now he puts his hand to it.

  4. Ezekiel 18:26 עָ֖וֶל בְּעַוְל֥וֹ injustice, for injustice his

If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.

  5. Ezekiel 28:15 עַוְלָ֖תָה unrighteousness <towards>

From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways—until wickedness was found in you.

Here: Twisted, unjust dealing, the opposite of the straight and whole conduct of 'tamim.' In the law it is the word for false weights and crooked judgment. Verse 18 names it outright: 'the injustice of your trade.'

  6. Ezekiel 28:18 בְּעֶ֙וֶל֙ by [the] unrighteousness of

By the multitude of your iniquities and the dishonesty of your trading you have profaned your sanctuaries. So I made fire come from within you, and it consumed you. I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the eyes of all who saw you.

Here: "By the injustice of". This is the word the Law uses for false weights and measures (Leviticus 19:35). It points to rigged dealing, not vague wickedness.

  7. Ezekiel 33:13 עָ֑וֶל וּבְעַוְל֥וֹ unrighteousness, and in unrighteousness his

If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but he then trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, then none of his righteous works will be remembered; he will die because of the iniquity he has committed.

  8. Ezekiel 33:15 עָ֑וֶל unrighteousness

if he restores a pledge, makes restitution for what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without practicing iniquity—then he will surely live; he will not die.

Here: Unfairness in how people are treated, as with rigged weights or a bent court. It keeps the verse's focus on dealings with other people rather than on sin in general.

  9. Ezekiel 33:18 עָ֑וֶל unrighteousness

If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he will die for it.

Hosea · 1
  1. Hosea 10:13 עַוְלָ֥תָה injustice

You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way and in the multitude of your mighty men,

Here: What they harvested: crooked dealing, the kind of unfairness the law forbids in court and in trade (Lev 19:15, 35). The form with the extra -ah ending is an old poetic form of the word (cf. Job 5:16), not 'her injustice'. Hebrew puts it first in its clause for emphasis: 'injustice is what you reaped.'

  2. Zephaniah 3:13 עַוְלָה֙ injustice

The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies, nor will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. But they will feed and lie down, with no one to make them tremble.”
