- Range of meaning
Personal name, generally derived from Egyptian p3-nḥsy, 'the Nubian / the southerner'. The name is also attested in Egypt. It was borne by Aaron's grandson and later by a son of Eli (1 Sam 1:3).
- Against the English
English 'Phinehas' follows the Greek/Latin spelling. The name's meaning plays no part in this verse.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Numbers 25:7–13: he kills an Israelite man and a Midianite woman who had brought idolatrous practice into the camp, and receives a 'covenant of peace… of a perpetual priesthood'. Joshua 22:13–32: he investigates a suspected rival altar. Judges 20:28: he 'stood before' the ark. Psalm 106:30–31 and Sirach 45:23–24 praise his zeal. 1 Maccabees 2:26, 54 holds him up as the model of zeal for the Law.
From the study of Joshua 22:13
- Range of meaning
A personal name. It is widely taken to come from Egyptian pa-nehesy, 'the Nubian' (literally 'the southerner/dark-skinned one'). Egyptian names in the Levite line (Moses, Hophni, Merari possibly) fit Israel's Egyptian background.
- Against the English
English 'Phinehas' is just a name. To an Israelite hearer, the name called up a story.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Num 25:7–13: at Baal Peor, Phinehas spears an Israelite man and a Midianite woman, stopping the plague. God grants him a 'covenant of peace' and a 'covenant of lasting priesthood'. Psalm 106:30–31 says it 'was counted to him as righteousness'. In later Jewish tradition he becomes the model of zeal (Sirach 45:23–24; 1 Maccabees 2:26, 54). He appears again at the civil war with Benjamin (Judg 20:28).
From the study of Joshua 22:30
- Range of meaning
A personal name, probably of Egyptian origin ("the Nubian" or "the dark-skinned one"). It is borne by Aaron's grandson.
- Against the English
Rendered the same everywhere.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Numbers 25:7–13: his spear stopped the plague at Peor and earned him a "covenant of perpetual priesthood." Psalm 106:30–31; Sirach 45:23; 1 Maccabees 2:26, 54 make him the model of zeal.

Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
Here: "And Phinehas," an Egyptian-derived name ("the Nubian"). It is also the name of Aaron's zealous grandson (Num 25), which makes this Phinehas's later conduct all the more ironic.
