Range of meaning

Susa: an ancient city on the plain of Khuzestan (southwestern Iran), capital of Elam for most of the second and first millennia BC. Darius I (522–486 BC) rebuilt it as a major Persian royal residence.

Against the English

KJV and YLT keep the Hebrew form 'Shushan'. Modern versions use the Greek-derived 'Susa', which is the same city.

Used elsewhere in the period

It appears in Elamite and Akkadian sources (Šušan/Šušun), in Esther, Nehemiah 1:1 and Ezra 4:9 ('the men of Susa'), and in Greek historians (Herodotus). Josephus (Antiquities 10.264–269) places Daniel at Susa. A long-standing tradition locates Daniel's tomb at modern Shush.
