In depth
From the study of Genesis 22:21
- Range of meaning
A personal name and a tribal or regional name. Jeremiah 25:23 lists Buz with Dedan and Tema, oasis peoples of north-west Arabia. Job 32:2 has 'Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite'. A man named Buz also appears in 1 Chronicles 5:14.
- Against the English
Translations simply transliterate the name. There is no drift.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The Assyrian king Esarhaddon (7th century BC) records a campaign against the lands of Bāzu and Ḫazû in the Arabian desert. Many scholars identify these with Buz and with Hazo (Genesis 22:22), Buz's brother. The link is widely accepted but not certain.

Here: The second son. Elsewhere Buz is an Arabian tribe or region, listed with Dedan and Tema (Jeremiah 25:23). Elihu in Job is called 'the Buzite' (Job 32:2). The name is spelled like the Hebrew word for 'contempt', but the text does not play on this.
