In depth
From the study of Matthew 28:16
- Range of meaning
The ordinary number 'eleven'. In early Christian narrative, 'the Eleven' becomes a temporary title for the apostolic circle in the interval between Judas' death and the choosing of Matthias.
- Against the English
English 'the eleven disciples' is accurate. What a modern reader may miss is that the number is a wound: the Gospels never call this group 'the Eleven' before the betrayal.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Used as a group title in Luke 24:9, 33; Acts 1:26; 2:14; and in the longer ending of Mark (16:14). Matthew uses it only here. Matthew 19:28 has Jesus promising the Twelve twelve thrones 'judging the twelve tribes of Israel', so twelve is a number for restored Israel. Acts 1:15–26 shows how much the early community felt the need to bring the number back to twelve.
- Range of meaning
The number eleven. In the Gospels and Acts, 'the Eleven' is a title for the apostles after Judas's loss.
- Against the English
BSB capitalizes 'the Eleven' as a title. Other versions use lowercase. The sense is the same.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Luke 24:9, 33; Acts 1:26 ('he was numbered with the eleven apostles'). Codex Bezae's reading 'ten apostles' seems to be an attempt to make the arithmetic exclude Peter differently.
