- Range of meaning
The Roman province of Macedonia, organised in 146 BC, covering roughly northern Greece. Thessalonica was its capital and the seat of the governor.
- Against the English
All versions say 'Macedonia'. The issue is not the word but what readers picture: a whole province with several churches, linked by a major Roman road.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Acts 16–17 records churches founded in Philippi, Thessalonica and Berea. The Via Egnatia, the Roman highway from the Adriatic to Byzantium, ran straight through Philippi and Thessalonica. 1 Thess 1:7–8 says the Thessalonians were an example 'to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia'. 2 Cor 8:1–5 praises the Macedonian churches' generosity in deep poverty.
