In depth

From the study of Jeremiah 2:26

Range of meaning

A thief, someone who takes property secretly. It differs from a robber who uses open force (gōzēl). The root gnb carries the idea of secrecy and stealth (compare 'stealing the heart', meaning deceiving, in Genesis 31:20).

Against the English

'Thief' is an accurate rendering. What the English lacks is how strongly the Hebrew word stresses that the theft depends on being hidden.

Used elsewhere in the period

The theft laws of Exodus 21:37–22:3 (English 22:1–4) require restitution several times over. Proverbs 6:30–31 says that even a thief who steals because he is hungry must repay sevenfold when he is 'found' (yimmātsē'), using the same verb.

From the study of Psalm 50:18

Range of meaning

Thief, one who takes property (or persons) secretly. The root gnb covers stealth: "stealing" someone's heart means deceiving them (Gen 31:20). Distinct from gāzal, open robbery or seizure by force.

Against the English

All versions say "thief"; accurate.

Used elsewhere in the period

Exod 20:15; 21:16 ("whoever steals a man" is the same root); 22:1–4; Jer 7:9; Hos 4:2; 7:1.
