In depth
- Range of meaning
To diminish, cut short, take away, clip, withdraw (e.g. 'do not take away from it,' Deut 4:2; 'they clipped... their beards,' Jer 48:37). As a participle: shorn, clipped, cut down.
- Against the English
All supplied versions render it 'cut off.' 'Shaved' or 'shorn' would be equally fair. 'Cut off' slightly sharpens 'cut short / clipped.'
- Used elsewhere in the period
Jeremiah 48:37, the parallel to this verse, has the same word: 'every beard clipped (gərūʿāh).' The variant gedûʿāh ('hewn, hacked off'), found in some Hebrew manuscripts, comes from gādaʿ, which is used of chopping down trees and smashing idols. Cutting someone else's beard was a deliberate humiliation (2 Sam 10:4–5). Doing it to oneself was a sign of being crushed by grief.
From the study of Ezekiel 16:27
- Range of meaning
To take away from, reduce, cut back, withhold; also to shave or clip (Isa 15:2; Jer 48:37) and to subtract from a set amount (Exod 5:8, 11, the brick quota; Deut 4:2, adding to or taking away from the commandments).
- Against the English
English "diminished/reduced" is accurate, but readers lose the legal echo.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exodus 21:10: if a man takes another wife, he "shall not diminish" (lōʾ yigraʿ) the first wife's food, clothing or marital rights. This is the core of Israelite law on what a husband owes his wife, and Ezekiel, a priest steeped in the law, uses the same verb for a husband's act.
From the study of Deuteronomy 4:2
- Range of meaning
To cut off, clip, trim, reduce, withhold, take away. It is used for clipped beards in mourning (Isa 15:2; Jer 48:37), for reducing the brick quota (Exod 5:8, 11, 19), for a family's name or inheritance being 'cut off' or shrunk (Num 27:4; 36:3–4), and for God 'withdrawing' his eyes (Job 36:7).
- Against the English
KJV/YLT 'diminish' and BSB 'subtract' are both fine. 'Take away' (WEB) is broader. The Hebrew picture is trimming or shaving down, so that what is left is a smaller version of the original.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Jer 26:2 uses this same verb when Yahweh tells Jeremiah to speak all his words: 'do not hold back (al-tigra') a word'. The ban works for a prophet passing on God's words as much as for a people obeying them. Deut 13:1 repeats the pairing.

Deuteronomy · 2
-
Deuteronomy 4:2 תִגְרְע֖וּ you must diminish
You must not add to or subtract from what I command you, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you.
Here: 'You shall cut back / take away.' The verb is used for clipping a beard, cutting a quota and shrinking an inheritance. Here it means trimming down the word given.
-
Deuteronomy 12:32 תִגְרַ֖ע you must diminish
See that you do everything I command you; do not add to it or subtract from it.
Here: Singular, 'you shall not cut down'. It means shaving something down or holding back part of what is owed, the way a quota or a portion can be reduced.
Job · 4
-
Job 15:4 וְתִגְרַ֥ע so you may diminish
But you even undermine the fear of God and hinder meditation before Him.
Here: To take away from something or cut it down, the verb of Deuteronomy 4:2's "do not take away from it." Eliphaz says Job is shrinking what people say to God and think about before him. He uses the same verb again in 15:8, where he accuses Job of keeping wisdom to himself.
-
Job 15:8 וְתִגְרַ֖ע and you may restrain?
Do you listen in on the council of God or limit wisdom to yourself?
Here: Used with "to yourself", it means pulling something away from others and drawing it to yourself, as if Job had cornered the supply of wisdom so that nobody else has any. Eliphaz used the same verb in v. 4 ("you diminish devotion before God"). The repeated word sharpens the charge: Job takes away piety from God and draws off wisdom for himself.
-
Job 36:7 יִגְרַ֥ע he withdraws
He does not take His eyes off the righteous, but He enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever.
Here: 'Take away, reduce, hold back.' The imperfect form describes what God habitually does: he never subtracts his attention from the righteous, not even a little.
-
Job 36:27 יְגָרַ֣ע he draws up
For He draws up drops of water which distill the rain from the mist,
Ecclesiastes · 1
-
Ecclesiastes 3:14 לִגְרֹ֑עַ to take away
I know that everything God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God does it so that they should fear Him.
Here: 'To take away', 'to shave off'. Elsewhere the verb is used for trimming a beard (Jer 48:37) or reducing a quota (Exod 5:8). No one can trim God's work down.
Isaiah · 1
-
Isaiah 15:2 גְּרוּעָֽה׃ [is] diminished
Dibon goes up to its temple to weep at its high places. Moab wails over Nebo, as well as over Medeba. Every head is shaved, every beard is cut off.
Here: 'Clipped off': the beard is cut down or shorn. Some manuscripts read a near-identical word meaning 'hacked off.'
Jeremiah · 2
-
Jeremiah 26:2 תִּגְרַ֖ע you hold back
“This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard of the house of the LORD and speak all the words I have commanded you to speak to all the cities of Judah who come to worship there. Do not omit a word.
Here: To reduce, trim or subtract from something. Jeremiah must not shorten or soften the message by leaving anything out.
-
Jeremiah 48:37 גְּרֻעָ֑ה [will be] clipped
For every head is shaved and every beard is clipped; on every hand is a gash, and around every waist is sackcloth.
Here: A passive participle, 'reduced, cut away'. The beard is not neatly trimmed. It has been hacked down or shorn off as a sign of grief and disgrace.
Ezekiel · 2
-
Ezekiel 5:11 אֶגְרַע֙ I will shave [you]
Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your detestable idols and abominations, I Myself will withdraw My favor; I will not look upon you with pity, nor will I spare you.
Here: 'I will clip / cut back / withdraw'. No object is stated. The word recalls the shaving of the prophet's hair in 5:1, since the same root describes clipped beards (Isa 15:2; Jer 48:37). It can also mean withdrawing (one's eyes or favour), as in Job 36:7.
-
Ezekiel 16:27 וָאֶגְרַ֖ע and I diminished
Therefore I stretched out My hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd conduct.
Here: "And I cut back." This is the verb Exodus 21:10 uses when it forbids a husband to cut back his wife's food, clothing and marital rights. The husband in this allegory does exactly that, as a penalty.
