In depth

From the study of Ezekiel 24:13

Range of meaning

The state of being ritually or morally unclean: contamination that makes a person, object, land or sanctuary unfit to be near God's holy presence. In priestly law it comes from corpses, skin disease, bodily discharges and the like, and is removed by washing, waiting, offerings or fire. In the prophets, especially Ezekiel, it extends to idolatry, sexual crimes and bloodshed, which pollute land and temple (Ezek 22:3–4; 36:17–18).

Against the English

'Uncleanness' (YLT, WEB's 'filthiness', KJV 'filthiness') can sound like dirt, poor hygiene or simply 'immorality'. The Hebrew is a sacred-system word: a contamination with real effects that has to be dealt with by the right means.

How it drifted

Since the Reformation, English religious use has turned 'uncleanness' into a near-synonym for sexual sin, and 'filthiness' simply means dirt. The idea of a contagious state in relation to the holy has largely dropped out.

Used elsewhere in the period

Leviticus 15–16 (Day of Atonement purges the sanctuary 'from the uncleannesses of the Israelites', Lev 16:16, 19); Num 35:33–34 (bloodshed pollutes the land and only the killer's blood atones for it); Ezek 22:15; 36:17, 25, 29; 39:24. The Qumran writings (for example the Community Rule) continue this priestly language of moral impurity.

From the study of Ezekiel 36:25

Range of meaning

Uncleanness, impurity. It is a contagious state caused by things like death, bodily discharges, certain diseases (Lev 12–15), and also by grave sins such as idolatry, murder and sexual wrongdoing (Lev 18:24–30; Num 35:33–34). Ritual impurity was usually not sinful in itself. Impurity caused by sin pollutes the sinner, the sanctuary and the land.

Against the English

KJV and WEB "filthiness" (and NASB's similar wording) makes a modern reader think of dirt or obscenity. BSB/NIV "impurities" and ESV "uncleannesses" stay closer. The plural is meaningful: many separate defilements.

How it drifted

In 1611 "filthiness" could mean moral pollution in general. Today it suggests physical grime or crude speech, and the idea of a status before God is lost.

Used elsewhere in the period

Ezek 22:15; 24:11, 13; 36:17, 29; 39:24. Lev 16:16, 19 (the Day of Atonement cleanses the sanctuary "from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel"). Zech 13:1–2 joins cleansing from niddah impurity with cutting off idols, much as Ezekiel does here.

From the study of Ezekiel 22:15

Range of meaning

Impurity or uncleanness. It is a state that disqualifies a person, object, place or land from contact with what is holy. It can come from natural sources such as corpses, bodily discharges and skin disease, which are not sins. It can also come from serious wrongs such as idolatry, murder and forbidden sexual acts. These defile the sinner and also the land and the sanctuary (Lev 18:24–28; Num 35:33–34).

Against the English

KJV and WEB say 'filthiness.' BSB, YLT and most modern versions say 'uncleanness.' 'Filthiness' points to dirt or disgust, and 'uncleanness' can sound like hygiene. Neither carries the priestly sense of unfitness to be near God, which threatens his continued presence among the people.

How it drifted

In everyday English 'unclean' and 'filthy' have lost their temple meaning and now suggest physical dirt or obscenity.

Used elsewhere in the period

The word is common in Leviticus and Numbers, and Ezekiel, a priest, uses it often (e.g., 24:11, 13; 36:17, 25, 29; 39:24). Ezekiel 36:17 compares Israel's conduct in the land to menstrual impurity, and 36:25 promises cleansing with sprinkled water. Several of the sins listed in 22:6–12 come straight from Leviticus 18 and 20, the chapters that warn the land will 'vomit out' those who defile it.

Here: 'From their impurity'. Israel is kept away from the ritual impurity the chapter has described: genital discharges, both normal and abnormal. In practice this means seeing that impure people do not bring their impurity near holy things and that they go through the prescribed purification.

  10. Leviticus 16:16 מִטֻּמְאֹת֙ טֻמְאֹתָֽם׃ from [the] uncleanness<es> of, uncleanness<es> their

Here: "His impurity": spoken of almost as a thing that clings to him.

Judges · 2
  1. Judges 13:7 טֻמְאָ֔ה uncleanness

But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite to God from the womb until the day of his death.’”

The Israelites who had returned from exile ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.

Here: Tum'ah is the impurity that disqualifies someone from approaching the sanctuary. Here it means the defilement tied to the nations' religious practices, above all the worship of other gods (compare Ezra 9:11).

  2. Ezra 9:11 בְּטֻמְאָתָֽם׃ with uncleanness their

Here: Her state of ritual impurity, the condition that in Israel's purity system barred a person from the sanctuary. It opens the verse and supplies its acrostic letter, ṭet (each verse of Lamentations 1 begins with the next letter of the alphabet). Coming right after verse 8's 'nakedness', it most likely pictures visible blood on her clothes.

Ezekiel · 8
  1. Ezekiel 22:15 טֻמְאָתֵ֖ךְ uncleanness your

I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you throughout the lands; I will purge your uncleanness.

Here: 'Your uncleanness.' This is the priestly term for a condition that makes a person, place or thing unfit to come near God's holy presence. In this chapter it comes from bloodshed, idols and sexual violations (22:3–4, 10–11). These are the 'impurities' that Leviticus 18 says defile the land itself.

  2. Ezekiel 24:11 טֻמְאָתָ֔הּ uncleanness its

Set the empty pot on its coals until it becomes hot and its copper glows. Then its impurity will melt within; its rust will be consumed.

  3. Ezekiel 24:13 בְּטֻמְאָתֵ֖ךְ מִטֻּמְאָתֵךְ֙ in uncleanness your, from uncleanness your

Because of the indecency of your uncleanness I tried to cleanse you, but you would not be purified from your filthiness. You will not be pure again until My wrath against you has subsided.

Here: Bet ("in") plus the noun for ritual and moral impurity, with a feminine 'your' because the city of Jerusalem is spoken to as a woman. It picks up the rust that will not come off the pot in v. 12: the city's guilt, above all the blood it has shed (vv. 6–9), is the contamination.

  4. Ezekiel 36:17 כְּטֻמְאַת֙ like [the] uncleanness of

“Son of man, when the people of Israel lived in their land, they defiled it by their own ways and deeds. Their behavior before Me was like the uncleanness of a woman’s impurity.

Here: “Like the uncleanness of”: the state of being unclean in the purity system. It sets up the comparison with the most familiar and long-lasting kind of bodily impurity.

  5. Ezekiel 36:25 טֻמְאוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם uncleanness<es> your

I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.

Here: "Your uncleannesses" (plural): the many kinds of defilement Israel had collected. In vv. 17–18 these were bloodshed and idol worship, which polluted the land the way menstrual impurity was thought to pollute.

  6. Ezekiel 36:29 טֻמְאֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם uncleanness<es> your

I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will summon the grain and make it plentiful, and I will not bring famine upon you.

Here: Plural: the many defilements Israel had piled up. In Ezekiel these are above all idolatry and bloodshed, which made both the people and the land unfit for God's holy presence (36:17–18).

  7. Ezekiel 39:24 כְּטֻמְאָתָ֥ם according to uncleanness their

I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and transgressions, and I hid My face from them.

Zechariah · 1
  1. Zechariah 13:2 הַטֻּמְאָ֖ה <the> uncleanness

And on that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.

Here: Ritual and moral defilement that makes people and land unfit for God's presence. It picks up 13:1, where a fountain cleanses 'sin and impurity'.
