In depth

From the study of Proverbs 18:10

Range of meaning

From the root gādal, 'to be great, big'. It means a tower: a fortified tower in a city wall or at a gate, an inner citadel, a free-standing fort or watchtower, a lookout tower in a vineyard or field (Isaiah 5:2), and in a few places a raised wooden platform (Nehemiah 8:4). Joined with ʿōz, 'strength', it means a citadel built to withstand siege.

Against the English

'Strong tower' (KJV, ESV, BSB) is accurate. NIV's 'fortified tower' and NLT's 'fortress' bring out the military side. What English readers may miss is that this kind of tower was a specific, familiar structure: the refuge everyone in town fled to when the walls were breached.

Used elsewhere in the period

The exact phrase migdal-ʿōz appears in Judges 9:51, where 'a strong tower was inside the city' of Thebez and 'all the men and women… fled to it, shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower'. That scene is almost a picture of this proverb: flight, entering, going up. Psalm 61:3 (Hebrew 61:4) calls God 'a tower of strength (migdal-ʿōz) against the enemy'. Excavated Iron Age towns in Israel and Judah had fortified gates and towers, and Assyrian siege reliefs (for example of Lachish) show defenders on tower tops.

From the study of Psalm 61:3

Range of meaning

Tower: a watchtower in a vineyard (Isa 5:2), a defensive tower in a city wall (2 Chr 26:9), or a free-standing fortified tower inside a town that served as citadel and last refuge (Judg 8:9, 17; 9:46–52). Also used of the tower of Babel (Gen 11:4).

Against the English

All the major versions say "tower." English readers may picture a tall decorative structure or a castle turret; the Hebrew picture is a squat, thick-walled defensive tower you run into when the town is overrun.

Used elsewhere in the period

Judges 9:51 is the closest parallel: in the town of Thebez there was a migdal-ʿōz, "a strong tower," and "all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled into it, shut themselves in, and went up on the roof." Prov 18:10 uses the same phrase: "The name of the LORD is a strong tower (migdal-ʿōz); the righteous runs into it and is safe." Archaeology of Iron Age Israelite towns shows such towers and fortified gate complexes.

From the study of Isaiah 30:25

Range of meaning

From gādal, 'to be great, large'. A migdāl is a tower: a watchtower in a vineyard (Isa 5:2), a defensive tower on a city wall or gate (2 Chr 26:9; 32:5), a stronghold (Judg 9:51). The Babel story uses it for a monument to human ambition (Gen 11:4).

Against the English

'Towers' is the correct word. The trouble is the picture: modern readers may think of skyscrapers or of particular modern buildings. In Isaiah's world a tower was military, a stone bastion that made a city feel safe.

How it drifted

Modern buildings called 'towers' have changed the image the English word calls up.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 2:15: 'against every high tower (migdāl gābōah) and every fortified wall' in the day of the LORD. Assyrian palace reliefs of the siege of Lachish (701 BC) show Judah's wall towers under attack. Hezekiah 'raised towers' on Jerusalem's walls in that crisis (2 Chr 32:5).
