Against the English

English versions differ on whether the second occurrence should be rendered as the person 'Merari' (KJV, WEB, YLT) or as the group, 'the Merarite clans' (BSB). Both readings are possible from the Hebrew.

Used elsewhere in the period

Merari appears in the Levi genealogies of Gen 46:11, Exod 6:16–19, Num 3:17–20, Num 26:57–58 and 1 Chr 6. In Chronicles, Merarite Levites later serve as temple singers (Ethan, 1 Chr 6:44) and gatekeepers.
