Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Proverbs 15:27

Range of meaning

Gift, present. It can be fully neutral or positive: Abraham's gifts to his sons (Gen 25:6), offerings dedicated to God (Exod 28:38), festival gifts (Esth 9:22). In legal and political settings it also means a bribe (Eccl 7:7, 'a mattānāh destroys the heart'). The related mattān appears in Prov 18:16, 'a man's gift makes room for him', and 19:6.

Against the English

KJV and YLT keep the literal 'gifts'. BSB, WEB, ESV, NIV, NASB and NLT all render 'bribes', which is an interpretive choice but well grounded in the context.

How it drifted

In modern English 'gifts' means birthday or holiday presents freely given. So the KJV wording can sound as if the righteous person refuses all presents.

Used elsewhere in the period

The usual Hebrew word for bribe is šōḥad (Exod 23:8; Deut 16:19; Prov 17:23). Proverbs and Ecclesiastes also use the softer 'gift' words for the same thing, which reflects a real social fact: in the ancient Near East a bribe was usually offered as a 'gift'. Egyptian wisdom gives the same warning. The Instruction of Amenemope (ch. 20) tells the scribe-official not to accept the bribe of the powerful and oppress the weak for him.

From the study of Psalm 68:18

Range of meaning

A gift or present: a father's gift to sons (Gen 25:6), gifts offered to God (Exod 28:38; Num 18:29, the 'gifts' of the holy portions), and gifts given to influence someone (Prov 15:27).

Against the English

'Gifts' is right, but in English it suggests generosity between equals or kindness to an inferior. In a war setting these are tribute: what the defeated and dependent bring to the overlord.

Used elsewhere in the period

Psalm 68:29 says 'Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring you gifts' (a different word, šay), and v.31 has envoys from Egypt and Cush stretching out their hands to God. The Bible records conquerors receiving tribute (2 Sam 8:2, 6, 10–11), and David dedicated such tribute to YHWH.

From the study of Ecclesiastes 7:7

Range of meaning

Gift, present: offerings to God, gifts from a father to sons, wedding gifts; in some contexts a gift meant to win favour, that is, a bribe.

Against the English

KJV/YLT 'gift' is literally correct; BSB, WEB, ESV, NIV, NASB and NLT all say 'bribe', which gives the sense the context requires.

How it drifted

To a modern reader 'a gift destroyeth the heart' (KJV) can sound puzzling or even like a warning against generosity; the context of wise men and extortion shows a gift given to influence judgment.

Used elsewhere in the period

Prov 15:27: 'he who hates gifts (mattānōt) will live', parallel to 'he who is greedy for gain troubles his house'. The usual technical word for a bribe is šōḥad (Exod 23:8; Deut 16:19); Qoheleth uses the softer word. Egyptian wisdom gives the same warning to officials: the Instruction of Amenemope (ch. 20) tells a man in court not to accept a powerful man's bribe and oppress the weak for him.
