In depth

From the study of Habakkuk 3:2

Range of meaning

A deed, an act, a work. With God as the subject it usually means his decisive acts in history, saving or judging. It is mostly a poetic word.

Against the English

KJV, NASB and WEB have 'work' (singular), BSB and NIV 'deeds' (plural). The singular keeps the echo of 1:5 and of the Exodus psalms. The plural makes it read like a general list of past miracles.

Used elsewhere in the period

Hab 1:5 ('I am working a work [pōʿal] in your days that you would not believe'); Ps 44:1 ('the work you worked in their days, in days of old'); Ps 77:12, which leads straight into an Exodus storm-theophany (a scene of God appearing in storm and earthquake) very like Hab 3; Ps 90:16 ('let your work appear to your servants'); Deut 32:4 ('his work is perfect'); Isa 5:12.

From the study of Proverbs 21:6

Range of meaning

Work, deed, act; also the result of work, meaning earnings or wages (Job 7:2; Jer 22:13, where the unjust king does not pay his workers their pōʿal). It is used of God's deeds and of human conduct.

Against the English

KJV/WEB 'the getting,' YLT 'the making,' BSB 'making a fortune.' All are fair. The Hebrew can also mean 'the earnings of,' and that shade fits well.

Used elsewhere in the period

The verb pāʿal appears in the stock phrase pōʿălê ʾāwen, 'workers of iniquity' (Ps 5:5; 6:8), a common Psalm term for active wrongdoers.

From the study of Isaiah 5:12

Range of meaning

Po'al means a deed, act or work, what someone does. Used of God, it means his action in events: saving acts (Psalm 44:1; 77:12) and acts of judgment (Habakkuk 1:5; 3:2, 'revive your work').

Against the English

BSB's 'actions of the LORD' and NIV/ESV's 'deeds' keep the sense of activity. KJV/WEB's 'work of the LORD' can sound to a modern reader like Christian ministry or 'the Lord's work' in a church sense, which is not the meaning here.

How it drifted

In modern church language 'the Lord's work' usually means ministry or service done for God. Here it means what God himself is doing.

Used elsewhere in the period

Psalm 28:5 is an almost exact match: 'Because they do not regard (bin) the deeds (pe'ullot) of the LORD or the work (ma'aseh) of his hands, he will tear them down.' Isaiah uses po'al and ma'aseh again together in 28:21 for God's 'strange' act of judgment, and 10:12 speaks of the Lord finishing 'all his work' on Zion through Assyria.

Where it appears

Deuteronomy · 2
  1. Deuteronomy 32:4 פָּעֳל֔וֹ work his

He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He.

Here: What God does, his action and conduct, here especially his dealings with Israel in history (vv. 7–14). A poetic word, singular, treating all his activity as one piece of work.

  2. Deuteronomy 33:11 וּפֹ֥עַל and [the] work of

  1. Ruth 2:12 פָּעֳלֵ֑ךְ deed[s] your

May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”

Here: 'Your deed', singular, with a feminine 'your'. In context it points back to everything Boaz has just listed in v.11: her loyalty to Naomi, leaving her parents and homeland. It is her conduct, not her labor in the field.

2 Samuel · 1
  1. 2 Samuel 23:20 פְּעָלִ֖ים deeds

And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.

  1. 1 Chronicles 11:22 פְּעָלִ֖ים deeds

And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab, and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.

Here: Things done. Here they are feats of arms, his 'exploits', and the next clauses give samples.

Job · 5
  1. Job 7:2 פָעֳלֽוֹ׃ wage[s] his

Like a slave he longs for shade; like a hireling he waits for his wages.

  2. Job 24:5 בְּ֭פָעֳלָם in work their

Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work foraging for food; the wasteland is food for their children.

  3. Job 34:11 פֹ֣עַל [the] work of

For according to a man’s deeds He repays him; according to a man’s ways He brings consequences.

Here: What a person does. The same word can also mean the wages earned for work, so the line has a built-in picture: a person's work comes back to him as his pay.

  4. Job 36:9 פָּעֳלָ֑ם work their

then He tells them their deeds and how arrogantly they have transgressed.

  5. Job 36:24 פָעֳל֑וֹ work his

Psalms · 11
  1. Psalm 9:16 בְּפֹ֣עַל by [the] work of

The LORD is known by the justice He brings; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands. Higgaion Selah

Here: "In/by the work of": the thing someone has done or built. The preposition can mean "by means of" (the instrument) or "in" (the place, as in caught inside the trap).

  2. Psalm 28:4 כְּפָעֳלָם֮ according to work their

Repay them according to their deeds and for their works of evil. Repay them for what their hands have done; bring back on them what they deserve.

Here: "According to their deed." It plays on verse 3, where they are called po'alei aven, "workers of iniquity": let their working come back on them. The word can also mean a worker's wages (Jer 22:13; Job 7:2), so there is a hint of "pay them for their work."

  3. Psalm 44:1 פֹּ֥עַל [the] deed[s]

For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.

Here: 'Work, deed,' singular. It is a word for God's decisive act in history taken as one whole, here the gift of the land (vv. 2–3). Compare Hab 3:2, 'your work (poʿal)... revive it.'

  4. Psalm 64:9 פֹּ֥עַל [the] deed[s] of

Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done.

Here: A particular act God has done: here, shooting down the plotters (v. 7). The same root names the enemies in v. 2, the 'workers of wickedness' (pōʿălê ʾāwen). Their 'work' is answered by God's 'work'.

  5. Psalm 77:12 פָּעֳלֶ֑ךָ work your

I will reflect on all You have done and ponder Your mighty deeds.

  6. Psalm 90:16 פָעֳלֶ֑ךָ deed[s] your

May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children.

Here: God's decisive act in history, especially an act of rescue. It is set against 'the work (maʿaseh) of our hands' in v. 17: first God's deed, then ours is made to last.

  7. Psalm 92:4 בְּפָעֳלֶ֑ךָ by deed[s] your

For You, O LORD, have made me glad by Your deeds; I sing for joy at the works of Your hands.

Here: 'By your deed' (singular in Hebrew). A poetic word often used of God's decisive acts in history, especially acts of rescue and of judgment. Here it is the cause of the gladness.

  8. Psalm 95:9 פָעֳלִֽי׃ work my

where your fathers tested and tried Me, though they had seen My work.

Here: "My work" (singular). The word is used for God's great acts in history: the plagues, the sea, the manna, the water from the rock. The singular treats all of it as one connected work of rescue.

  9. Psalm 104:23 לְפָעֳל֑וֹ to work his

Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until evening.

  10. Psalm 111:3 פָּֽעֳל֑וֹ work his

Splendid and majestic is His work; His righteousness endures forever.

Here: "His work": one singular, collective noun for God's acting in history. In this psalm it takes in the deeds listed in vv. 4–9: food given, covenant remembered, land handed over, redemption sent.

  11. Psalm 143:5 פָּעֳלֶ֑ךָ deed your

I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I consider the work of Your hands.

Here: 'Your doing': an act God carried out, especially in history. Psalm 44:1 uses the same word for 'the deed you did in their days, in the days of old (qedem)'.

Proverbs · 5
  1. Proverbs 20:11 פָּעֳלֽוֹ׃ activity his

Even a young man is known by his actions—whether his conduct is pure and upright.

Here: "His work": what he actually does, his conduct as a whole. This is the thing being judged pure or straight. It forms a pair with "his deeds" in the first line.

  2. Proverbs 21:6 פֹּ֣עַל [the] acquisition of

Making a fortune by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist, a deadly pursuit.

Here: The act of working something up or earning it, and also what the work produces. Here it means 'the getting' or 'the making' of wealth: active effort to pile up money. It is the grammatical subject of the whole saying.

  3. Proverbs 21:8 פָּעֳלֽוֹ׃ work his

The way of a guilty man is crooked, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.

Here: "His doing / his work": what a person actually does. It matches "way" in the first line. The clean person's actions run straight.

  4. Proverbs 24:12 כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ׃ according to work his

If you say, “Behold, we did not know about this,” does not He who weighs hearts consider it? Does not the One who guards your life know? Will He not repay a man according to his deeds?

Here: 'According to his deed': repayment measured to fit what the person did. Here the 'deed' includes the failure to act that verse 11 described.

  5. Proverbs 24:29 כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ׃ according to deed his

Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man according to his work.”

Here: "According to his deed": what he did, and possibly also what he has 'earned', since the same word can mean a worker's wages (Job 7:2). The phrase repeats word for word a line Proverbs reserves for God's judgment (24:12).

Isaiah · 6
  1. Isaiah 1:31 וּפֹעֲל֖וֹ and work his

The strong man will become tinder and his work will be a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the flames.

Here: 'And his work', most likely the things he made and trusted, especially the sacred trees and gardens of v. 29. The vowels could also be read as 'the one who made it' (KJV).

  2. Isaiah 5:12 פֹּ֤עַל [the] deed[s] of

At their feasts are the lyre and harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and fail to see the work of His hands.

Here: What YHWH is actively doing. In Isaiah this means his intervention in history, above all the judgment now coming on Judah (compare 'his strange deed', 28:21).

  3. Isaiah 41:24 וּפָעָלְכֶ֖ם and work your

Behold, you are nothing and your work is of no value. Anyone who chooses you is detestable.

  4. Isaiah 45:9 וּפָעָלְךָ֖ and work your

Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker—one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?

Here: 'And your work': the potter's product. The sudden 'your' is hard to pin down. It either starts a second question ('Does your work say…?') or continues the clay's complaint ('Your work has no handles!').

  5. Isaiah 45:11 פֹּ֥עַל [the] work of

Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: “Concerning things to come, do you question Me about My sons, or instruct Me in the work of My hands?

Here: 'The work of': both what God has made (Israel, and in v. 12 the whole creation) and what he is now doing in history through Cyrus.

  6. Isaiah 59:6 וּפֹ֥עַל and deed[s] of

Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds are sinful deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands.

Here: 'And the deed of…': a poetic match for 'works', meaning an act actually carried out.

Jeremiah · 3
  1. Jeremiah 22:13 וּפֹעֲל֖וֹ and wage[s] his

“Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms without justice, who makes his countrymen serve without pay, and fails to pay their wages,

Here: 'And his work': here what the work earned, his wages, as in Job 7:2, where the hired man waits for his pō'al.

  2. Jeremiah 25:14 כְּפָעֳלָ֖ם according to deed[s] their

For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.’”

Here: 'In keeping with what they did.' The preposition ke- ('according to, like') sets the measure: the penalty matches the conduct.

  3. Jeremiah 50:29 כְּפָעֳלָ֔הּ according to deed[s] its

Summon the archers against Babylon, all who string the bow. Encamp all around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her as she has done. For she has defied the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.

Here: 'According to her work'. Poʿal is a person's conduct or achievement taken as a whole, here Babylon's record as an empire. The payment matches it.

Habakkuk · 2
  1. Habakkuk 1:5 פֹ֙עַל֙ a deed

“Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe even if someone told you.

Here: 'A deed'. In the Psalms and Prophets this word is used for God's great acts in history (Ps 44:1; 90:16; Isa 5:12). Verse 6 says what this act is: God raising up the Babylonians.

  2. Habakkuk 3:2 פָּֽעָלְךָ֙ work your

O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!

Here: God's action in history. It is placed first for emphasis ('Your work, LORD…'). The same noun appears in 1:5, 'I am doing a work in your days,' and in psalms that recall the Exodus.
