In depth

From the study of Isaiah 45:8

Range of meaning

To sprout or spring up. In the causative form used here, to make something sprout. It is used of plants (Genesis 2:5, 9), and as a picture for new beginnings and restoration (Isaiah 42:9; 43:19; 44:4).

Against the English

English versions use 'spring up', 'sprout', 'flourish' or 'cause to spring up', and all are fine. Most lose the causative force, that the earth itself produces the growth once it has been watered.

Used elsewhere in the period
  • Isaiah 61:11: 'as a garden makes what is sown sprout, so the Lord YHWH will make righteousness sprout'.
  • Noun tsemach, 'Sprout/Branch': a royal title in Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12.
  • Psalm 85:12 [11]: 'Truth sprouts from the earth'.

From the study of Isaiah 43:19

Range of meaning

To sprout, spring up, shoot forth, used of plants, grass, hair, and figuratively of things that emerge and grow (righteousness, healing, a ruler).

Against the English

KJV "spring forth", WEB "springs out" and YLT "springeth up" keep the plant picture. BSB "it is coming" and NLT "I have already begun" keep the timing but lose the image of a shoot breaking the soil.

Used elsewhere in the period

Genesis 2:5, 9 (plants sprouting); Isaiah 42:9 ("before they sprout, I tell you"); 44:4 ("they shall sprout like grass"); 45:8 ("let righteousness sprout"); 58:8 ("your healing shall sprout quickly"); 61:11. The related noun ṣemaḥ, "Branch/Shoot", becomes a title for the coming king (Jeremiah 23:5; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12).

From the study of Isaiah 55:10

Range of meaning

To sprout, spring up, shoot forth. In the causative form: to make sprout, cause to grow. The related noun tsemach means 'sprout, shoot, branch'.

Against the English

'Bud' and 'sprout' are accurate. What English cannot show is how much Isaiah does with this verb.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 42:9 and 43:19, new things 'spring forth'; Isa 44:4, Israel's offspring 'spring up like grass'; Isa 45:8, 'let the earth open, and salvation sprout'; Isa 61:11, 'as the earth brings forth its sprout … so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness to sprout'. The noun tsemach, 'Branch', is used for a coming royal figure in Isa 4:2; Jer 23:5; Zech 3:8; 6:12.

Where it appears

Genesis · 5
  1. Genesis 2:5 יִצְמָ֑ח <it> was sprouting

Now no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for the LORD God had not yet sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.

Here: "Had sprouted". It is the ordinary word for a plant pushing up out of the soil. The same root later gives the prophets' word "Branch" or "Sprout" (tsemach), but no such meaning is in view here.

  2. Genesis 2:9 וַיַּצְמַ֞ח and he made sprout

Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Here: The causative form: God makes the trees sprout up out of the soil. It picks up 2:5, where 'no plant of the field had yet sprouted' (the same verb). The lack noted there is now filled. The same verb comes back darkly in 3:18, where the ground 'will make thorns and thistles sprout' for the man.

  3. Genesis 3:18 תַּצְמִ֣יחַֽ <it> will cause to sprout

Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.

  4. Genesis 41:6 צֹמְח֖וֹת [were] springing up

After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted, thin and scorched by the east wind.

  5. Genesis 41:23 צֹמְח֖וֹת [were] springing up

After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted—withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind.

Exodus · 1
  1. Exodus 10:5 הַצֹּמֵ֥חַ that is sprouting

They will cover the face of the land so that no one can see it. They will devour whatever is left after the hail and eat every tree that grows in your fields.

Leviticus · 1
  1. Leviticus 13:37 צָֽמַח־ it has sprouted

If, however, in his sight the scaly outbreak is unchanged and black hair has grown in it, then it has healed. He is clean, and the priest is to pronounce him clean.

Deuteronomy · 1
  1. Deuteronomy 29:23 תַצְמִ֔חַ it causes to grow

All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.

Here: 'She will not make anything sprout'. The land itself can no longer push up growth. The fertility the land was praised for (Deut 8:7–9) is gone.

Judges · 1
  1. Judges 16:22 לְצַמֵּ֖חַ to grow back

However, the hair of his head began to grow back after it had been shaved.

2 Samuel · 2
  1. 2 Samuel 10:5 יְצַמַּ֥ח it will grow back

When this was reported to David, he sent messengers to meet the men, since they had been thoroughly humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”

  2. 2 Samuel 23:5 יַצְמִֽיחַ׃ will he make grow?

Is not my house right with God? For He has established with me an everlasting covenant, ordered and secured in every part. Will He not bring about my full salvation and my every desire?

Here: 'He will make it sprout': God makes the dynasty's future spring up like the grass sprouting after rain in v. 4. It is a growth image, and it is the root later used for the messianic 'Branch' (tsemach).

1 Chronicles · 1
  1. 1 Chronicles 19:5 יְצַמַּ֥ח it will grow back

When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had been thoroughly humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”

Job · 3
  1. Job 5:6 יִצְמַ֥ח it springs up

For distress does not spring from the dust, and trouble does not sprout from the ground.

  2. Job 8:19 יִצְמָֽחוּ׃ they will spring up

Surely this is the joy of his way; yet others will spring from the dust.

  3. Job 38:27 וּ֝לְהַצְמִ֗יחַ and to cause to sprout

to satisfy the parched wasteland and make it sprout with tender grass?

Psalms · 4
  1. Psalm 85:11 תִּצְמָ֑ח it springs up

Faithfulness sprouts from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.

Here: A farming verb for green shoots breaking through the soil. The form (an imperfect) presents the sprouting as ongoing or still to come, which fits the psalm's hope of a coming harvest (v.12).

  2. Psalm 104:14 מַצְמִ֤יחַ [he is] causing to grow

He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, bringing forth food from the earth:

Here: A participle, 'the one who keeps making things sprout.' The psalm describes God by what he is doing all the time, not by one act in the past. Growth from the soil is his work, happening now.

  3. Psalm 132:17 אַצְמִ֣יחַ I will make grow

There I will make a horn grow for David; I have prepared a lamp for My anointed one.

Here: God speaking: 'I will make sprout.' A growth word, used of plants and of beards and horns growing. It promises new, living growth from David's line that God himself causes.

  4. Psalm 147:8 הַמַּצְמִ֖יחַ who causes to sprout

who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the hills.

Here: "The one who makes [things] sprout." The causative form makes God the one actually behind the growth: the grass comes up because he makes it come up.

Ecclesiastes · 1
  1. Ecclesiastes 2:6 צוֹמֵ֥חַ sprouting of

I built reservoirs to water my groves of flourishing trees.

Isaiah · 8
  1. Isaiah 42:9 תִּצְמַ֖חְנָה they will spring up

Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

Here: "They sprout." A plant word: the new events are pictured as shoots about to break through the soil. The feminine plural matches "new things". God names them while they are still seeds underground, before any human eye can see them.

  2. Isaiah 43:19 תִצְמָ֔ח it is springing up

Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

Here: "It is sprouting". A plant word, used of shoots breaking through the soil. The new thing is pictured as a seedling just pushing up: small and early, but alive, visible, and sure to grow.

  3. Isaiah 44:4 וְצָמְח֖וּ and they will spring up

They will sprout among the grass like willows by flowing streams.

Here: "And they will sprout." The subject is the "offspring" and "descendants" of verse 3, the ones on whom God pours his Spirit and blessing. The Hebrew verb form, with "and" joined to it, carries on verse 3's promise into the future. It is the verb for new shoots breaking out of the ground.

  4. Isaiah 45:8 תַצְמִ֙יחַ֙ let it cause to sprout

Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up that salvation may sprout and righteousness spring up with it; I, the LORD, have created it.

Here: 'Let her [the earth] make it sprout.' The same verb is used in Isaiah 61:11, where God makes righteousness sprout like a garden. Its noun, tsemach ('Sprout/Branch'), elsewhere became a title for a coming king.

  5. Isaiah 55:10 וְהִצְמִיחָ֑הּ and it has made sprout it

For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat,

Here: 'And has made her sprout'. Isaiah uses this verb for the new things God makes spring up (42:9; 43:19; 45:8; 61:11).

  6. Isaiah 58:8 תִצְמָ֑ח it will spring up

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Here: 'Will sprout.' This is a plant word, so the healed flesh is pictured as growing up like new shoots. The image of growth goes with the image of dawn.

  7. Isaiah 61:11 תַצְמִ֑יחַ יַצְמִ֤יחַ it makes grow, he will make grow

For as the earth brings forth its growth, and as a garden enables seed to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

Here: 'Makes sprout': the garden brings its seeds up. The causative form gives the garden itself the role of producing; in the next clause the same verb is used with God as subject.

Jeremiah · 1
  1. Jeremiah 33:15 אַצְמִ֥יחַ I will cause to sprout

In those days and at that time I will cause to sprout for David a righteous Branch, and He will administer justice and righteousness in the land.

Here: A causative verb in the first person: God himself makes the plant come up. The verb shares its root with the noun 'sprout' two words later, so the sound plays as 'I will sprout a sprout.' The picture is plant life, not building. In the parallel at 23:5 God says 'I will raise up.'

Ezekiel · 3
  1. Ezekiel 16:7 צִמֵּ֔חַ it had grown

I made you thrive like a plant of the field. You grew up and matured and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.

Here: 'Had sprouted.' This is the verb behind 'sprouting of the field' at the start of the verse. The wordplay ties the two ends of the verse together: she grows like the plants of the field.

  2. Ezekiel 17:6 וַיִּצְמַ֡ח and it sprouted

It sprouted and became a spreading vine, low in height, with branches turned toward him; yet its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and yielded branches and sent out shoots.

  3. Ezekiel 29:21 אַצְמִ֤יחַ I will make grow

In that day I will cause a horn to sprout for the house of Israel, and I will open your mouth to speak among them. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”

Here: 'I will make sprout': the causative form with God as the subject. It is a growing-plant verb, used here of a horn pushing out, so the picture is new life and new strength appearing, and God makes it happen.

Zechariah · 1
  1. Zechariah 6:12 יִצְמָ֔ח he will sprout

And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Here is a man whose name is the Branch, and He will branch out from His place and build the temple of the LORD.

Here: A deliberate play on his name: Sprout will sprout. The verb is future or ongoing ('he will spring up'), and it pictures new life rising out of the ground.
