Where it appears

Ezra · 1
  1. Ezra 7:14 וְשִׁבְעַ֤ת and seven

You are sent by the king and his seven counselors to evaluate Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God, which is in your hand.

Daniel · 5
  1. Daniel 3:19 שִׁבְעָ֔ה seven

At this, Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave orders to heat the furnace seven times hotter than usual,

Here: With ḥad, 'seven times over'. Seven is the number of fullness, so the order means 'to the absolute maximum' rather than a measured temperature.

  2. Daniel 4:16 וְשִׁבְעָ֥ה and seven

Let his mind be changed from that of a man, and let him be given the mind of a beast till seven times pass him by.

Here: 'And seven.' This is the number of a complete, fixed amount. The sentence is limited and measured out, not open-ended.

  3. Daniel 4:23 שִׁבְעָ֥ה seven

And you, O king, saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump with its roots in the ground, with a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and graze with the beasts of the field till seven times pass him by.’

Here: 'Seven': a real count, and also the ancient number of a full, completed cycle.

  4. Daniel 4:25 וְשִׁבְעָ֥ה and seven

You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.

Here: Seven: the number of completeness in the ancient Near East. It gives an exact count of periods, and also suggests that the full set amount will be served.

  5. Daniel 4:32 וְשִׁבְעָ֥ה and seven

You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”

Here: 'And seven.' Seven is the number of a complete, set measure in Israelite and wider Near Eastern thinking. It marks the sentence as full and fixed, whatever the length of each unit.
