- Range of meaning
A male goat. Elsewhere it appears only in lists of livestock (Gen 30:35; 32:14 [Eng. 32:15]; 2 Chr 17:11).
- Against the English
'He-goat' or 'male goat' is accurate. The Vulgate's aries ('ram') changes the animal.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The Septuagint adds 'leading the herd (hēgoumenos aipoliou)', which makes explicit what shepherds already knew. Compare Jeremiah 50:8, 'be like male goats before the flock', where male goats are a picture of leadership.
