In depth

From the study of Proverbs 17:6

Range of meaning

Beauty, splendour, glory, honour. It also means the thing a person takes pride in or boasts of. It can be literal finery (Isa 3:18; 'beautiful garments', Isa 52:1). It can be honour and renown (Deut 26:19). It can be a boast, sometimes a bad one ('the pride of his haughty looks', Isa 10:12). It comes from the root pʾr, 'to beautify, glorify'. Its reflexive form can mean 'to boast'.

Against the English

KJV, ESV, NASB, BSB, WEB and YLT say 'glory'. NIV and NLT say 'pride'. 'Pride' is closer to the sense here: what children boast in and are proud of. 'Glory' can sound like heavenly radiance.

How it drifted

In church English 'glory' mostly belongs to God: light, majesty, worship. In older English 'the glory of X' could just mean X's pride and ornament. That sense has faded.

Used elsewhere in the period

Paired with ʿăṭeret in Prov 4:9 and 16:31 ('crown of glory'). 'The glory of young men is their strength' (Prov 20:29) is a close parallel in form. The LXX renders it kauchēma, 'boast, ground of boasting', which shows that ancient translators read it as 'pride/boast'.

From the study of Isaiah 4:2

Range of meaning

Beauty, splendor, glory. Often it means adornment or finery, the visible beauty that brings honor.

Against the English

'Glory' (BSB), 'beauty' (WEB, YLT), 'comely' (KJV). Every English rendering misses the deliberate echo of 3:18, where the same word is translated 'finery' or 'bravery' (KJV).

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 3:18: 'the Lord will take away the finery (tip̄ʾereṯ) of the anklets'. Isa 13:19 (Babylon's splendor); Isa 28:1, 4, 5; Exod 28:2, 40 (priestly garments 'for glory and for beauty', the same pair of 'for…' phrases).

From the study of Isaiah 13:19

Range of meaning

Beauty, splendor, adornment (the priest's garments 'for glory and for beauty', Exodus 28:2). Also glory as something to boast about, and boasting itself (Isaiah 10:12; Judges 7:2, where Israel might 'boast' over God).

Against the English

KJV gives 'beauty' here and 'glory' for tsevi, swapping the usual pairing. ESV has 'splendor', BSB and NASB 'glory'. None of them can carry the word's tilt toward boasting.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isaiah uses it of God's own beauty (60:19; 63:15) and of human self-glorification that God will bring down (10:12; 13:19). The Septuagint here reads quite differently (see textual notes).

  3. 1 Chronicles 29:13 תִּפְאַרְתֶּֽךָ׃ splendor your

Now therefore, our God, we give You thanks, and we praise Your glorious name.

Here: Literally 'the name of your splendor'. Hebrew uses this kind of phrase where English uses an adjective, so 'your glorious/splendid name'. The word means beauty, adornment and the splendor someone is proud of, and it repeats the tif'eret ascribed to God in v. 11.

  4. Psalm 96:6 וְ֝תִפְאֶ֗רֶת and splendor

Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty fill His sanctuary.

Here: 'And glorious beauty.' This is beauty that brings honor and glory, the word used for the high priest's garments and the temple's splendor. It is more than prettiness. Paired with 'oz it may also bring to mind the ark of the covenant (compare Psalm 78:61).

Proverbs · 6

  2. Proverbs 16:31 תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת splendor

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained along the path of righteousness.

  3. Proverbs 17:6 וְתִפְאֶ֖רֶת and [are the] honor of

Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of a son is his father.

  4. Proverbs 19:11 וְ֝תִפאַרְתּ֗וֹ and glory his

A man’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.

Here: 'And his splendour'. This means what adorns a person and brings him honour in the eyes of others, like a crown or fine clothing. It is not an inner moral quality hidden from view.

  5. Proverbs 20:29 תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת [the] glory of

  6. Proverbs 28:12 תִפְאָ֑רֶת glory

When the righteous triumph, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves.

On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors.

Here: 'And for splendor / finery.' The same word is used in 3:18 for the 'finery' the Lord strips off Jerusalem's women. God now gives back a better ornament.

  3. Isaiah 10:12 תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת [the] glory of

So when the Lord has completed all His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of his arrogant heart and the proud look in his eyes.

Here: Usually a positive word for splendor or glory. Here it is the king's self-glorifying display, his swagger. It shares a root with 'boast' in v.15 (yitpaʾer).

  4. Isaiah 13:19 תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת [the] splendor of

And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

Here: Splendor on display, the kind of beauty people show off. In Isaiah the word can tip into boasting (10:12, Assyria's 'boastful looks'). Here it praises Babylon and quietly accuses it at once.

  5. Isaiah 20:5 תִּפְאַרְתָּֽם׃ boasting their

Those who made Cush their hope and Egypt their boast will be dismayed and ashamed.

Here: 'Their splendor', meaning the impressive thing they showed off and took pride in. The word comes from a root that also means 'to boast'. In context it is the ally they bragged about. It sits right after v. 4, where Egypt is led away stripped naked, so the 'splendor' ends in exposure.

  6. Isaiah 28:1 תִפְאַרְתּ֑וֹ splendor its

Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the fading flower of his glorious splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, the pride of those overcome by wine.

  7. Isaiah 28:4 תִפְאַרְתּ֔וֹ splendor its

  11. Isaiah 52:1 תִפְאַרְתֵּ֗ךְ beauty your

Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion! Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, holy city! For the uncircumcised and unclean will no longer enter you.

who sent His glorious arm to lead them by the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to gain for Himself everlasting renown,

  3. Jeremiah 13:20 תִּפְאַרְתֵּֽךְ׃ beauty your

Lift up your eyes and see those coming from the north. Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your pride?
