In depth

From the study of Ephesians 1:18

Range of meaning

Inheritance or property received by lot or by right. In the Greek Old Testament it translates naḥalah, the allotted land of each tribe, and also Israel itself as the LORD's own possession.

Against the English

English 'inheritance' suggests money left after a death. The biblical background is the allotment of the promised land, and God taking a people as his own portion. No death is in view.

Used elsewhere in the period

Deuteronomy 9:29 'they are your people and your inheritance'; Deuteronomy 32:9 'the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance'; Psalm 33:12. The Dead Sea Scrolls, 1QS 11:7–8: God 'has given them an inheritance in the lot of the holy ones'. Elsewhere in the NT: Colossians 1:12 'the inheritance of the saints in light'; Acts 20:32; 26:18. Within Ephesians: 1:11 ('we were made an inheritance/allotted'), 1:14 ('the guarantee of our inheritance... God's own possession').

From the study of Ephesians 5:5

Range of meaning

'Inheritance': the share of an estate that passes to the heirs. In the LXX it usually translates Hebrew נַחֲלָה (naḥalah), the plot of land God allotted to each Israelite tribe and family (Num 26; Josh 13–19). Over time it widened to Israel's share in God's future blessings, 'inheriting the land/earth' (Ps 37:11; Matt 5:5) and 'inheriting the age to come'.

Against the English

Modern 'inheritance' suggests money left by someone who has died. The biblical word is about family standing: a share in the family land that belongs to the sons. It was not something you buy or earn.

How it drifted

In modern English 'inheritance' means wills and estates. The Israelite picture of an allotted portion of God's land has faded.

Used elsewhere in the period

LXX Num 26:53–56; Deut 4:21; Ps 16:5–6 (LXX 15:5–6); Psalms of Solomon 14:5–10 contrasts the pious who 'inherit life' with sinners whose 'inheritance is Hades'; in Ephesians, 1:11, 14, 18, and 3:6 (gentiles as 'co-heirs').

From the study of Hebrews 11:8

Range of meaning

An inheritance. More broadly, a possession that comes to someone as their allotted share, often land. It comes from klēros, 'lot' or 'allotted portion.'

Against the English

English 'inheritance' brings to mind money or property passed on at someone's death. In the Greek Old Testament klēronomia usually translates the Hebrew naḥalah: the land-portion God assigns to Israel, its tribes and families, held by God's grant and not bought.

How it drifted

Modern inheritance law and the everyday sense of 'what my parents leave me' push out the biblical sense of a God-given land allotment.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Deuteronomy the land of Canaan is regularly Israel's klēronomia (for example Deuteronomy 4:21, 12:9). In Genesis 15:7 God brought Abram out of Ur 'to give you this land to inherit.' Hebrews uses the related words often: Christ is 'heir of all things' (1:2), and believers 'inherit the promises' (6:12) and receive 'the eternal inheritance' (9:15).
