In depth

From the study of Joshua 11:19

Range of meaning

A gentilic name (a name for a people). The Hivites are one of the peoples regularly listed among the pre-Israelite inhabitants of Canaan (Deut 7:1; Josh 3:10; 9:1). In the Bible they are placed at Shechem (Gen 34:2), at Gibeon and its league (Josh 9:7), "under Hermon in the land of Mizpah" (Josh 11:3), and in the Lebanon range (Judg 3:3).

Against the English

English versions agree on "Hivites" and make the singular into a plural, which is correct for a collective. YLT keeps the singular "the Hivite."

Used elsewhere in the period

No non-biblical text clearly names a people called Hivites. Who they were is uncertain. The Septuagint sometimes renders "Hivite" as Chorraios ("Horite") in Gen 34:2 and Josh 9:7. That has led some scholars to link them with the Hurrians, a non-Semitic people widespread in Late Bronze Age Syria-Canaan. Other scholars have proposed Anatolian connections. Neither identification is secure.

From the study of Joshua 11:3

Range of meaning

A people of Canaan found in several places: Shechem (Gen 34:2), Gibeon and its towns (Josh 9:7; 11:19), and the Lebanon and Hermon range (Josh 11:3; Judg 3:3; 2 Sam 24:7). Some scholars link the name with the Hurrians, a people known from northern Mesopotamia and Syria, but the link is debated.

Against the English

English gives only a name. Readers may not notice that Hivites appear both in the far north (here) and in the central hills (Gibeon). That spread fits a scattered population or several groups with the same label.

Used elsewhere in the period

Judges 3:3: 'the Hivites who lived in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath'. The Septuagint sometimes swaps 'Hivite' and 'Horite' (e.g. Gen 34:2; Josh 9:7), and it reads 'Hittite' in this verse. This shows the names were easily confused in transmission.

From the study of Joshua 9:1

Range of meaning

Gentilic (a name for a people group): 'Hivite.' Located at Shechem (Gen 34:2), Gibeon and its allied towns (Josh 9:7, 17), and in the north under Lebanon and Hermon (Josh 11:3; Judg 3:3). Their origin is unknown. Some link them to the Hurrians or to Que in Cilicia; none of these proposals is secure.

Against the English

All versions say 'Hivites'. The difficulty is not translation but the fact that most readers do not see the connection with the next story.

Used elsewhere in the period

Found only in the Bible. In the Septuagint the Hivites and Horites (Hurrians) are sometimes confused in places (e.g. Gen 34:2; Josh 9:7), which shows that ancient scribes too were unsure who they were.

Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite,

And I have promised to bring you up out of your affliction in Egypt, into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’

I will send the hornet before you to drive the Hivites and Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.

  6. Exodus 33:2 הַחִוִּ֖י the Hivite[s]

And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

  7. Exodus 34:11 וְהַחִוִּ֖י and the Hivite[s]

Observe what I command you this day. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

Here: 'And the Hivite': linked in the Bible with Shechem (Gen 34:2) and Gibeon (Josh 9:7). Some scholars connect the Hivites with the Horites/Hurrians.

Deuteronomy · 2

Here: 'And the Hivite.' The Bible links them with Shechem (Gen 34:2) and Gibeon (Josh 9:7). Their identity is unclear, and some connect them with the Horites or Hurrians.

  2. Deuteronomy 20:17 הַחִוִּ֖י the Hivite[s]

For you must devote them to complete destruction—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you,

Joshua · 7
  1. Joshua 3:10 הַחִוִּ֗י the Hivite[s]

He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.

Here: A people linked with Shechem (Gen 34:2) and Gibeon (Josh 9:7). Gibeon will soon make a treaty with Israel, so not every name on this list was in fact driven out.

  2. Joshua 9:1 הַחִוִּ֖י the Hivite[s]

Now when news of this reached all the kings west of the Jordan—those in the hill country, the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon (the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)—

Here: This name matters at once. The Gibeonites of the very next episode are Hivites (9:7). One of the groups named in this united front is about to break away from it.

  3. Joshua 9:7 הַחִוִּ֑י the Hivite[s]

But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”

Here: Singular with 'the', meaning the whole people. The narrator reveals here that the strangers are Hivites, one of the nations of Canaan that Israel was forbidden to make treaties with (Deut 7:1–2). The reader knows this; Israel does not.

  4. Joshua 11:3 וְהַֽחִוִּי֙ and the Hivite[s]

to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country; and to the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

Here: 'And the Hivite'. Hivites are placed in several regions in the Bible (Gibeon in Josh 9:7; the Lebanon range in Judg 3:3). Here they are the northernmost group, at the foot of Mount Hermon.

  5. Joshua 11:19 הַחִוִּ֖י the Hivite[s]

Here: 'And the Hivite'. A people listed among the pre-Israelite nations. Here it means the northern branch in the Lebanon highlands, not the Hivites of Gibeon or Shechem further south.

  2. Judges 3:5 וְהַחִוִּ֖י and the Hivite[s]

Thus the Israelites continued to live among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

Here: Linked with Shechem (Gen 34:2), Gibeon (Josh 9:7) and the Lebanon–Hermon region (Judg 3:3). Gibeon is the group that tricked Israel into a treaty, which makes the name an uneasy one in a list about failing to keep separate.
