Jericho

A proper name for the spring-fed oasis town in the lower Jordan Valley, also called "the city of palms" (Deut 34:3; Judg 3:13). The name may be linked to yareaḥ, "moon", or to the root r-w-ḥ, "fragrance". Neither is certain.

In depth

From the study of Joshua 18:21

Range of meaning

A proper name for the spring-fed oasis town in the lower Jordan Valley, also called "the city of palms" (Deut 34:3; Judg 3:13). The name may be linked to yareaḥ, "moon", or to the root r-w-ḥ, "fragrance". Neither is certain.

Against the English

All versions say "Jericho".

Used elsewhere in the period

Joshua 2 and 6 tell its fall. The curse on rebuilding is in Joshua 6:26, and its fulfilment when Hiel of Bethel rebuilds it in Ahab's day is in 1 Kings 16:34. People are present there in the meantime (Judg 3:13; 2 Sam 10:5). The site is Tell es-Sultan.

From the study of Joshua 5:13

Range of meaning

Jericho, an oasis city in the lower Jordan valley north of the Dead Sea, fed by a large spring. It is among the oldest continuously settled sites known, and it controlled the routes from the Jordan crossings up into the hill country.

Against the English

The preposition "in" (bə-) is translated "by" (KJV, WEB, YLT, ESV) or "near" (BSB, NIV, NLT). Those choices are sensible, because the city is still shut up (6:1), so Joshua cannot be inside it. The Vulgate makes this explicit: "in the field of the city of Jericho."

Used elsewhere in the period

Joshua 2; 4:13 ("the plains of Jericho"); 4:19 (camp at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho); 6:1. Hebrew can use "in" with a place name for its surrounding district.

From the study of Ezra 2:34

Range of meaning

The proper name of the oasis city about 8 km west of the Jordan and north of the Dead Sea, fed by a strong spring. The origin of the name is uncertain. It may come from yārēaḥ, "moon", perhaps pointing to an old moon cult, or from rêaḥ, "scent", fitting its palm groves and balsam. Neither is proven.

Against the English

All English versions say "Jericho", and that is accurate.

Used elsewhere in the period

Hebrew spells it two ways: יְרִיחוֹ (as in Joshua) and the shorter יְרֵחוֹ (as here and often in Numbers). Jericho is the first city taken in Joshua 6 and was put under a curse against rebuilding (Josh 6:26). It was rebuilt under Ahab (1 Kgs 16:34), its spring was healed by Elisha (2 Kgs 2:19–22), and Zedekiah was captured in its plains as he fled the Babylonians (2 Kgs 25:5). After the exile, men of Jericho rebuilt a section of Jerusalem's wall (Neh 3:2).
