In depth

From the study of Judges 6:3

Range of meaning

A people descended, in Genesis, from Abraham through Keturah (Gen 25:2). They lived mainly in north-west Arabia, east of the Gulf of Aqaba, and ranged into Transjordan and Sinai. They were tribal, mobile and sometimes involved in caravan trade.

Against the English

English versions say 'the Midianites'. The Hebrew uses the collective singular 'Midian', which treats them as one body.

Used elsewhere in the period

Moses married into Midian, and his father-in-law Jethro was a Midianite priest (Exod 2–3; 18). Israel and Midian clash in Num 25 and 31. Midianite traders appear in Gen 37:28. Archaeologists link a distinctive painted pottery found at Qurayyah in the Hejaz and at Timna, sometimes called 'Midianite ware', with the region in the late Bronze and early Iron Ages.

From the study of Judges 6:1

Range of meaning

Midian is a people and region in north-west Arabia (the Hejaz, east of the Gulf of Aqaba). In Genesis 25:2 they descend from Abraham through Keturah. They appear as caravan traders (Gen 37:28), as Moses' in-laws (Exod 2–3), as enemies at Baal-peor (Num 25; 31), and here as raiders mounted on camels.

Against the English

English versions differ only in form: "Midian" (KJV, BSB, ESV) or "the Midianites" (NLT, NIV). Both are fine.

Used elsewhere in the period

Archaeologists link painted "Midianite" (Qurayyah) pottery of the late Bronze and early Iron Age with this region and with the Timna copper mines in the Arabah. Isaiah 9:4 and 10:26 and Psalm 83:9–11 remember "the day of Midian" as a byword for YHWH's great rescue.
