In depth
From the study of 1 Samuel 15:3
- Range of meaning
Both the ancestor (a grandson of Esau, Gen 36:12) and the people descended from him: semi-nomadic raiders of the Negev and Sinai, south of Judah. In Hebrew thought a people can be spoken of as one person, so the verse says 'him' and 'his.'
- Against the English
KJV, WEB and YLT keep 'Amalek' as a single collective figure ('all that it hath,' YLT). BSB and NIV 'the Amalekites' are clearer but lose the sense of one enemy-figure, which is how Deut 25:19 ('blot out the memory of Amalek') speaks.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exod 17:8–16 (the attack at Rephidim; 'the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation'); Deut 25:17–19 (Amalek struck the weary and faint stragglers at the rear 'and did not fear God'); Num 24:20; Judg 6:3, 33 (raiding with Midian); 1 Sam 14:48 (Saul rescued Israel 'from the hand of those who plundered them'); 1 Sam 30 (Amalekites burn Ziklag and carry off women and children); 1 Chr 4:43. Later Jewish tradition made Haman 'the Agagite' (Esth 3:1) a descendant of the Agag of this chapter.
From the study of 1 Samuel 15:7
- Range of meaning
The name of a descendant of Esau (Genesis 36:12) and of the people descended from him, a mobile desert people associated with the Negev, the dry south of Canaan (Numbers 13:29), and with raiding (Judges 6:3).
- Against the English
BSB, KJV-style "the Amalekites" is accurate as to who is meant. YLT's bare "Amalek" keeps the Hebrew feel of a people treated as one named enemy.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exodus 17:8-16 (the attack on Israel and the vow of war "from generation to generation"); Deuteronomy 25:17-19 (the command to blot out Amalek's memory); Numbers 24:20. Apart from the Bible, no firm ancient record of this people has been identified, so what we know comes almost entirely from the biblical text.
From the study of 1 Samuel 15:2
- Range of meaning
A personal name (Esau's grandson, Gen 36:12, 16) that also names the people descended from him. They were a mobile tribal people of the Negev, the Sinai and the southern desert, known in the biblical texts as raiders.
- Against the English
BSB and NIV make it plural ("the Amalekites"). KJV, ESV, NASB and WEB keep the Hebrew singular "Amalek ... he." The singular keeps the Hebrew habit of treating a whole people as one responsible person across generations, which is central to the logic of this verse.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exodus 17:8–16 tells of Amalek's attack at Rephidim and Yahweh's vow: "I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek ... Yahweh will have war with Amalek from generation to generation." Deuteronomy 25:17–19 commands Israel to remember how Amalek "met you on the way ... and struck down all the stragglers behind you when you were faint and weary, and he did not fear God," and to blot out their memory once at rest in the land. Balaam calls Amalek "first of the nations" whose end is destruction (Num 24:20). Amalekites raid Israel in Judges 3:13 and 6:3, and Saul has already fought them (1 Sam 14:48). They raid Ziklag in 1 Samuel 30. Outside the Bible, no inscription or archaeological find clearly identifies them.

After this, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
Here: The people called by the name of their ancestor Amalek, Esau's grandson (Genesis 36:12). The verbs are singular because the whole nation acts as one figure. They were desert-dwelling relatives of Israel.
-
Exodus 17:9 בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק against Amalek
So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”
Here: "Against Amalek." Amalek is a desert people descended from Esau (Gen 36:12), and the Hebrew uses the people's name as if it were one person. A major pause in the traditional accent marks falls here and closes the first half of the verse.
-
Exodus 17:10 בַּעֲמָלֵ֑ק against Amalek
Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Here: With the verb 'fight,' the preposition 'b-' means 'against.' Amalek is named as one figure, the ancestor standing for the whole people (compare Genesis 36:12). That is how verses 14–16 can speak of a war 'with Amalek from generation to generation.'
-
Exodus 17:11 עֲמָלֵֽק׃ Amalek
As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.

-
Numbers 24:20 עֲמָלֵ֔ק עֲמָלֵ֔ק Amalek
Then Balaam saw Amalek and lifted up an oracle, saying: “Amalek was first among the nations, but his end is destruction.”
Here: A semi-nomadic people of the Negev and Sinai, traced in Genesis 36:12 to Esau's grandson. In Israel's memory it was the enemy that attacked first and worst (Exodus 17; Deuteronomy 25). The name means a people, so the "he" and "his" that follow refer to Amalek as one collective figure.
