- Range of meaning
Barley, the grain or the plant. Barley ripened in early spring (around March–April), several weeks before wheat. It was cheaper and less valued than wheat and was a staple of poorer households and animal feed.
- Against the English
English 'barley bread' sounds wholesome or rustic. To an Israelite it meant humble, common food. It also signalled the earliest point in the year's harvest.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Barley's early harvest: Exodus 9:31–32; Ruth 1:22. It was half the value of wheat in 2 Kings 7:1, 16. In Judges 7:13 a barley loaf stands for lowly Israel. The first sheaf (omer) offered at Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:10–14) was understood to be barley.
