Appears 23 times in 22 verses of the Greek New Testament. ·
What it means
δι-ότι , conjunct., for διὰ τοῦτο, ὅτι (Lat. propterea quod),
because: Luke 1:13 2:7 21:28, Acts 13:35 18:10 20:26 22:18, Romans 1:19, 21 3:20 8:7, 21, 1 Corinthians 15:9, Philippians 2:26, 1 Thessalonians 2:8, 18 (Lft., Notes, 37) 1 Thessalonians 4:6, Hebrews 11:5, 23, James 4:3, 1 Peter 1:16 1:24 2:6. It is usually stronger than ὅτι, but sometimes, as in Luke 1:13, Romans 1:19, 1 Thessalonians 2:18, approximates to MGr. sense, for; cf. Milligan, Th., l.with†

In depth
- Range of meaning
Normally 'because, for' (= διὰ τοῦτο ὅτι). In Hellenistic Greek it is sometimes used for διό, 'therefore, for this reason'.
- Against the English
All the major English versions render it 'therefore/wherefore'. That is right for the sense here, though the word's usual meaning is causal.
- Used elsewhere in the period
BDAG notes that διότι occasionally means 'therefore'. Byzantine manuscripts have the easier διό here, which suggests copyists also felt the unusual use.
Where it appears
Luke · 3
-
Luke 1:13 διότι because
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.
Here: Gives the reason he need not fear: the visit is an answer, not a judgment.
-
Luke 2:7 διότι because
And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Here: Gives the reason for the trough specifically: the baby was laid there because the usual space was not available.
-
Luke 21:28 διότι because
When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
Here: Gives the reason for the changed posture. The same events that make the world faint are the disciples' signal that rescue is coming.
Acts · 5
-
Acts 13:35 διότι therefore
So also, He says in another Psalm: ‘You will not let Your Holy One see decay.’
Here: It links this quotation to the one before it (Isaiah 55:3 in v. 34): "this is why" a second text says something similar. It works as "for this reason" more than as a plain "because."
-
Acts 18:10 διότι διότι because
For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you, because I have many people in this city.”
Here: Gives the first reason behind the commands of v. 9 ("do not fear, keep speaking"): Paul can speak because of who is with him.
-
Acts 20:26 διότι therefore
Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.
Here: Usually 'because', but in later Greek it can stand in for διό, 'therefore', and that is how it works here. It draws a conclusion from verse 25: since they will never see Paul again, he must settle the account now.
-
Acts 22:18 διότι because
and saw the Lord saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here will not accept your testimony about Me.’
Here: Gives the reason for the order. The reason is that his witness will be refused, not (in this telling) that his life is in danger.
Romans · 4
-
Romans 1:19 διότι because
For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
Here: A causal link back to verse 18. People 'suppress the truth' because there really is a truth about God in front of them to suppress. It explains why God's anger is justified.
-
Romans 1:21 διότι For
For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.
Here: Gives the reason behind verse 20's verdict 'without excuse': they are without excuse *because* they knew God and still refused him what he was owed.
-
Romans 3:20 διότι Therefore
Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.
Here: Gives the reason for 3:19: every mouth is stopped and the whole world is liable before God *because* no one will be acquitted on the basis of works of law. It points back to what came before. It does not draw a new conclusion.
-
Romans 8:7 διότι because
because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
Here: Gives the reason for verse 6. The mindset of the flesh leads to death because it sets itself against God, the source of life.
1 Corinthians · 1
-
1 Corinthians 15:9 διότι because
For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
Here: Gives the concrete reason he is disqualified: his past campaign against Jesus' followers.
Philippians · 1
-
Philippians 2:26 διότι because
For he has been longing for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill.
Here: Gives the cause of his distress: it was not his illness as such but the fact that the church had heard about it.
1 Thessalonians · 3
-
1 Thessalonians 2:8 διότι because
We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our own lives as well. That is how beloved you have become to us.
Here: It gives the reason for the self-giving.
-
1 Thessalonians 2:18 διότι therefore
For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again and again—but Satan obstructed us.
Here: Ties this verse to verse 17. Paul's eagerness to see them face to face is explained, or backed up, by the fact that he actually decided to come. Here it means 'because' or 'for', not 'therefore' (see textual notes).
-
1 Thessalonians 4:6 διότι because
and no one should ever violate or exploit his brother in this regard, because the Lord will avenge all such acts, as we have already told you and solemnly warned you.
Here: Introduces the reason for the command: the Lord's role as avenger.
Hebrews · 2
-
Hebrews 11:5 διότι because
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.
Here: "Because." It gives God's act as the reason Enoch could not be found. The Greek Genesis has the near-synonym ὅτι here.
-
Hebrews 11:23 διότι because
By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after his birth, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were unafraid of the king’s edict.
Here: Introduces why they acted: what they saw in the child.
James · 1
-
James 4:3 διότι because
And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures.
Here: Gives the reason for the non-answer. It is a slightly stronger, more explanatory "because" than the common hoti.
1 Peter · 3
-
1 Peter 1:16 διότι because
for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Here: Links this verse to the command in v.15 ("be holy in all your conduct") and gives the reason for it. Peter's reason is a quotation from Scripture, not his own opinion.
-
1 Peter 1:24 διότι because
For, “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
Here: Introduces the scriptural proof for verse 23. The readers were born again from imperishable seed, and Isaiah shows why that matters: everything born only of human seed perishes.
-
1 Peter 2:6 διότι Therefore
For it stands in Scripture: “See, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone; and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”
Here: Gives the reason for verse 5: the readers can be called 'living stones' built into God's house because Scripture already speaks of God laying a stone in Zion. It grounds the claim rather than starting a new thought, so 'therefore' is a little off; 'for' is closer.
