In depth

From the study of Revelation 7:4

Range of meaning

A number or total. It can also be a figure that carries meaning, especially in apocalyptic writing.

Against the English

"Number" is accurate. The question is whether the number is meant as a literal tally or as a symbol.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Revelation the word is used for the beast's number, 666, which "is a man's number" and calls for wisdom (13:18). It is also used for the cavalry of 200 million (9:16), another number John "heard," and for the enemies "like the sand of the sea" (20:8). Elsewhere in apocalyptic writing, numbers like 12, 7 and 1,000 regularly stand for completeness and fullness.

From the study of Luke 22:3

Range of meaning

Number, sum, total, a count of people. In Luke–Acts it often counts members of the community (Acts 4:4; 6:7; 11:21; 16:5).

Against the English

The BSB, NIV and NLT render it 'one of the Twelve,' as Mark 14:10 does. That loses Luke's own wording. The KJV and ESV ('of the number of the twelve') and the WEB ('counted with the twelve') keep the idea of a counted, fixed body.

Used elsewhere in the period

Acts 1:17 picks up the same idea about Judas: 'he was numbered (katērithmēmenos) among us and received his share in this ministry.' Acts 1:15–26 then restores the count to twelve with Matthias. The Twelve are linked to Israel's twelve tribes in Luke 22:30, and the twelve tribes were central to Jewish hopes of national restoration (e.g. Sir 48:10; Psalms of Solomon 17:26–28; the Dead Sea Scrolls' council of twelve, 1QS 8:1).

From the study of Revelation 5:11

Range of meaning

Number, total, count.

Against the English

Rendered "number" everywhere, which is accurate.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Revelation: the number of the sealed, 144,000 (7:4); the number of the cavalry (9:16); the number of the Beast (13:18); Satan's armies "like the sand of the sea" (20:8). Compare the "great multitude that no one could number" (7:9).
