In depth
- Range of meaning
Epidemic disease, plague, pestilence, often fatal and striking whole communities. In some poetry it is personified as a figure that walks or strikes.
- Against the English
'Pestilence' (KJV, WEB, NIV, ESV) and 'plague' (BSB) are both accurate. NLT's 'deadly disease' makes it sound like one person's illness and loses the sense of a spreading epidemic.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exod 9:3 (plague on livestock); Lev 26:25 and Deut 28:21 (covenant curse); 2 Sam 24:13–15 (the plague after David's census). It is part of Jeremiah's repeated triad 'sword, famine and plague'. Hab 3:5 shows it personified: 'Before him went Deber, and Resheph followed at his feet'. Resheph was a Canaanite plague god. Hos 13:14: 'O Death, where are your plagues?'
From the study of Ezekiel 38:22
- Range of meaning
Dever is epidemic disease or plague, often sent as divine punishment (Exod 9:3, 15; Lev 26:25; Deut 28:21). Dam is 'blood', and in contexts like this it means blood violently shed, so death by violence.
- Against the English
'Pestilence and blood' (KJV, WEB) is literal; 'plague and bloodshed' (BSB, NIV, ESV) states the sense more clearly. Nothing major is lost either way.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Ezekiel uses this pair as a fixed formula: 'pestilence and blood shall pass through you' (5:17), 'I will send pestilence into her, and blood into her streets' (28:23), and with sword and famine (14:19). The Septuagint often translates dever as thanatos, 'death', meaning deadly plague.
From the study of Ezekiel 14:21
- Range of meaning
Epidemic disease, 'plague, pestilence': deadly sickness that spreads through a population, and also through livestock (Exod 9:3, the cattle plague in Egypt). In poetry it is sometimes almost personified as a destroyer that walks (Hab 3:5; Ps 91:6).
- Against the English
'Pestilence' (KJV, WEB, ESV) and 'plague' (BSB, NIV, NASB) are both fine. NLT's 'disease' is a bit flat.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Exod 5:3; 9:3, 15; Lev 26:25 ('I will send pestilence among you' when you gather into your cities); 2 Sam 24:13–15; Jer 14:12; 21:6–9. The trio sword–famine–pestilence appears in Jeremiah about 15 times and in Ezek 5:12; 6:11–12; 7:15; 12:16. In Hab 3:5 Deber walks before God, and in Canaanite religion Resheph, named in the same verse, was a plague god.

Here: The prefix mi- ('from') still depends on 'you will not fear' in verse 5. Deber is a deadly epidemic that hits people and herds together. In the poetry of Israel and its neighbours it could also be pictured as a figure who moves about, which is why the next verb has it 'walking.'
