What it means

here, there, now, hither

Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Genesis 15:16

Range of meaning

'Hither, to here' (movement toward the speaker's place). With prepositions it can become a time word: ʿad-hennah, 'up to here' = 'until now, so far' (e.g., Gen 44:28; Josh 15:63 uses a similar phrase).

Against the English

Translations render the first as 'here/hither' and the second as 'yet' or 'not yet', so English readers cannot see that it is the same word twice.

Used elsewhere in the period

The temporal ʿad-hennah is common in narrative ('until now'). The Septuagint translates it here as ἕως τοῦ νῦν, 'until now'.

From the study of Jeremiah 50:5

Range of meaning

Hēnnâ: 'hither, to this place', which assumes the speaker is at the destination. Pānîm: face, presence, front. 'Setting the face' toward a place expresses determined movement and intention.

Against the English

BSB 'turn their faces toward it' and KJV 'thitherward' ('that way') put the speaker away from Zion. The Hebrew 'hither' puts the speaker at Zion, looking at the faces coming toward him.

Used elsewhere in the period

Jer 42:15, 17 and 44:12 use 'set their faces' to go to Egypt: the same idiom, used for the opposite direction, away from the land. 2 Kgs 12:17 and Dan 11:17 show the same idiom of resolve.

Where it appears

Genesis · 8
  1. Genesis 15:16 הֵ֑נָּה הֵֽנָּה׃ hither, now

In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

When one of them was gone, I said: “Surely he has been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.

  5. Genesis 45:5 הֵ֑נָּה hither

And now, do not be distressed or angry with yourselves that you sold me into this place, because it was to save lives that God sent me before you.

Here: "To here," meaning Egypt, the very place where the brothers now stand begging for grain.

  6. Genesis 45:8 הֵ֔נָּה hither

Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God, who has made me a father to Pharaoh—lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

Numbers · 1
  1. Numbers 14:19 הֵֽנָּה׃ now

Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people, in keeping with the greatness of Your loving devotion, just as You have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt.”

Here: The word usually means 'to here.' It works in both senses at once: from Egypt all the way to this spot at Kadesh, and from then until now.

Joshua · 5
  1. Joshua 2:2 הֵ֧נָּה hither

And it was reported to the king of Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”

  2. Joshua 3:9 הֵ֔נָּה hither

  2. 1 Samuel 7:12 הֵ֖נָּה now

Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”

Here: Basically “to here, hither”, a word of place. With ʿad it can mean “to this point”, whether up to this place or up to this time. Verse 11 has just described a pursuit that ran out from Mizpah, so “as far as here” fits the spot well, and the phrase also reaches over the whole time of trouble up to now.

  3. 1 Samuel 20:21 וָהֵ֗נָּה and hither

Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you, and there is no danger.

Here: 'And this way', back toward the speaker. 'From you and this way' means the arrows lie between the boy and Jonathan, short of where the boy ran. Verse 22's opposite, 'from you and beyond', means they flew past him.

2 Samuel · 5
  1. 2 Samuel 1:10 הֵֽנָּה׃ here

Psalms · 1
  1. Psalm 71:17 הֵ֝֗נָּה now

O God, You have taught me from my youth, and to this day I proclaim Your marvelous deeds.

Here: Literally 'hither, to here.' It is a word of place used for time, so 'up to here' means 'up to now, to this day' (compare Gen 15:16; 1 Sam 1:16). The speaker stands at the present end of a long road and looks back down it.

Proverbs · 3
  1. Proverbs 9:4 הֵ֑נָּה here

“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” she says to him who lacks judgment.

Here: "To here," meaning into Wisdom's house, which she has just built and stocked for a feast (9:1–2). It points to the place: come this way, to me.

  2. Jeremiah 48:47 הֵ֖נָּה here

Yet in the latter days I will restore Moab from captivity,” declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.

Here: 'Here'. 'Up to here' is a scribe's or editor's way of saying 'this is where it ends', like the closing note in Jeremiah 51:64.

  3. Jeremiah 50:5 הֵ֣נָּה hither

They will ask the way to Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will come and join themselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.

Here: 'This way, to here.' The speaker talks as if standing in Zion, watching the returning exiles' faces turned toward him. English 'toward it' or 'thitherward' loses that point of view.

  4. Jeremiah 51:64 הֵ֖נָּה here

Then you are to say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again, because of the disaster I will bring upon her. And her people will grow weary.’” Here end the words of Jeremiah.
