In depth
From the study of Exodus 23:19
- Range of meaning
ḥālāb is milk, usually goat's milk in Israel (Prov 27:27), and a symbol of abundance ('a land flowing with milk and honey'). ʾēm is mother. Together: the milk of the kid's own mother.
- Against the English
English translations agree on 'its mother's milk'. Readers who know Jewish practice may assume the verse bans all meat with dairy. The wording itself is narrower.
- How it drifted
The rabbinic separation of meat and dairy (Mishnah Ḥullin 8; Babylonian Talmud Ḥullin 115b), built on the law appearing three times (Exod 23:19; 34:26; Deut 14:21), is a later, carefully argued development. It is not what the bare wording states.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Philo of Alexandria (On the Virtues 142–144) took the law as a lesson in gentleness: the milk that fed the young should not become its cooking liquid. Similar laws keep mother and young apart: Leviticus 22:28 (do not slaughter a cow and its calf on the same day) and Deuteronomy 22:6–7 (do not take the mother bird with her young).
From the study of Exodus 34:26
- Range of meaning
Milk, fresh or soured, from goats, sheep or cows. It stands for plenty ('a land flowing with milk and honey') and for nourishment.
- Against the English
'Milk' is accurate. The same consonants could be read ḥēleb, 'fat', but every ancient witness reads 'milk'.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Gen 18:8 (milk served with a calf to Abraham's guests); Judg 4:19; 5:25; Prov 27:27 (goats' milk as a household's food). Philo, On the Virtues 142–144, finds it monstrous that the substance that fed a living creature should be used to cook it once dead.
From the study of Deuteronomy 11:9
- Range of meaning
Milk, chiefly from goats and sheep, and the soured milk and curds made from it. Its consonants are the same as cheleb, "fat," which is why some ancient readers heard "fatness" in it as well (compare Gen 45:18, "the fat of the land").
- Against the English
"Milk" is accurate, but modern readers picture cows. In Israel's hill country goats were the main source (Prov 27:27, "goats' milk enough for your food").
- Used elsewhere in the period
Proverbs 27:27; Judges 4:19; Isaiah 7:22 (curds and honey eaten by survivors in a land returned to pasture).
