In depth
From the study of Deuteronomy 33:28
- Range of meaning
The fresh product of the grape harvest: newly pressed juice or young wine, the vintage itself. It belongs to the farming triad "grain, new wine and olive oil" (dagan, tirosh, yitshar). Usually it names a crop, not a drink served at table.
- Against the English
"New wine" (BSB, WEB) is good. KJV and YLT have just "wine". Some modern readers assume "new wine" means unfermented grape juice, but the Hebrew word is not that narrow.
- How it drifted
Modern debates about alcohol and Jesus' saying about "new wine" in old wineskins colour the phrase. The Hebrew is about harvest.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Gen 27:28 (Isaac's blessing of Jacob: "dew of heaven… plenty of grain and new wine"); Deut 7:13; 11:14; 12:17; 14:23; 18:4; Hos 2:8 [10]. Hos 4:11 ("wine and new wine take away the understanding") shows tirosh could intoxicate.
From the study of Deuteronomy 11:14
- Range of meaning
The fresh product of the grape harvest: grape must and new or young wine. Usually listed as a farm commodity alongside grain and oil; distinct from yayin, the general word for wine.
- Against the English
BSB/WEB/NIV 'new wine'; KJV 'wine'. 'New wine' is a fair rendering. It does not mean wine as a drink served at table so much as the harvest yield itself.
- Used elsewhere in the period
In the stock triad 'grain, new wine and oil' throughout Deuteronomy (7:13; 12:17; 14:23; 18:4; 28:51) and in Hos 2:8 [Heb 2:10]: 'she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil'. Hos 4:11 ('wine and new wine take away the understanding') shows it could intoxicate. The Septuagint usually renders it οἶνος.
- Range of meaning
Wine of the new vintage. Freshly pressed grape juice or wine early in fermentation, thought of as a harvest product (in the vat, in the cluster, Isa 65:8), next to grain and oil. It is a farming term more than a drinking term. The ordinary word for wine as a drink is yayin.
- Against the English
"New wine" (BSB, WEB, YLT, NIV, ESV) is accurate. KJV's plain "wine" loses the harvest flavour. Some readers think "new wine" means unfermented juice.
- How it drifted
In 19th- and 20th-century temperance debates, tirosh was often argued to be non-alcoholic grape juice. Hosea 4:11 ("wine and new wine take away the understanding") shows it could intoxicate, though in this verse its alcohol content is not the point.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Deut 7:13; 11:14; Hos 4:11; 9:2; Joel 1:10; Mic 6:15 ("you will tread... new wine but not drink wine"). A related word for wine appears in Ugaritic texts (as listed in HALOT).
